OMG rescind...

To be honest, if you had that GPA, what you should have done was notify them BEFORE you accepted the SIR. Because if you notify them afterwards, they might be mad and would ask why you didn’t notify them ahead of time. Its like you were absent and didn’t know the quiz was on the day you got back. Instead of telling your teacher you were absent and letting her know you can’t take the quiz, you take it and get a failing grade.

I am on the same boat as you in some ways. I had a medical reason that forced me to miss school for 2 months. I went back and made up ALL my grades, but I got a D in my AP Literature class (35 pages well-written turned in at the end…and still a D…). I am taking another English class this semester to make up that a-g credit, and I notified them before I took my SIR. All they wanted was an explanation of what happened, I just sent them the e-mail back with my reasoning. My fingers are crossed. Good luck to you too.

Also I called them and asked about it. Most likely, you won’t get rescinded as they like to keep the accepted students. The person on the other end was probably being too nice though, imo.

Thanks for he reply Loves! I’m still waiting for a reply from the counselor, it’s been a week and still no response, which is quite odd because the first time i sent the letter, the counselor responded within one week.

Joyfulchute-You sent the letter by mail or email? and how did they respond back? Did they email you? or send you a letter as well? I’m on the same boat, and I mailed them a letter around last week, and I haven’t received any response yet.

I sent a message via message center on MyApplications on the UCI admissions website. I tried to talk directly with the admissions counselor, but the person at the office of admissions told me that the best way to reach them is through message center. Good luck to the both of us, can you tell me your problem?

The counselor messaged back! looks like it’s bad news for me though, ha looks like if worse comes to worse, I’m headed to community college.

This was the reply

Hi (Name),

The 3.0 GPA is in reference to your senior year GPA.

Best,

Monique(UCI Admissions Counselor)

Wow that was straight up! Did you explain your situation? Dude don’t worry I’m starting to consider cc aswell

I’ve told my counselor about this, and she’s going to make a bunch of calls because she swears she’s never heard of this before, but ehhh…

This just makes me want to bang my head on the wall. I am definitely in a worse boat, but I REALLY hope they take account my situation-it wasn’t because I slacked or anything (it was actually the opposite), I really had a legitimate reason that caused me to miss 2 months of school-and when I came back, I made up all my coursework.

Good luck bringing up your GPA!

Yeah, your reason is definitely more legit than mine. I was going through stress because my mom is my only parent who is unemployed. She told me during my senior finals that she would stop receiving unemployment benefits in the coming months. I usually never worried about money, but I kept over thinking my financial problems, and I didn’t think I’d be able to pay for college. My coping method was to just not care and go to a CC, but I found out student loans are available along with Financial Aid, etc.

Sad story, I know how it feels workin and trying yo concentrate on school… If you live in the area, I’d suggest making an appointment to meet up with the counselor of your school, they’re considerate for the most part.

All I can do right is hope for the best, expect the worst.

GUYS! I DID NOT GET RESCINDED!!! I EVEN TOLD THE UC COUNSELOR (at the message center) OF MY FAILING GRADE, AND MY SIR WAS NOT TAKEN AWAY. NOTHING WAS CHANGED. SHE ONLY WARNED ME NOT TO FAIL ANYTHING THIS SEMESTER. THANK YOU GOD!

So, good news, if I could get away with a D, most of you have a better chance. GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

Well it even says on the freshman contract that MULTIPLE D and F grades may result in cancellation of your admission. So one D or one F isn’t a big deal to them.

That’s GREAT news Quiditch, My SIR was also not taken away, but I don’t know if I’ll be rescinded or not. The counselor told you that if you don’t fail anymore classes you’ll be fine, so you’re good to go!

I guess you presented a good case. The counselor (Monique) seemed not to care too much about mine. =/ ehh…

Go With the CC, it’s a better choice. I didn’t go to high school AT ALL (skipped way too much) and instead enrolled at a CC. The classes are easier, it’s way more flexible, and trust me, way easier to blow off and still get A’s. Do that for 2 years, save up money and accumulate units, then go to UCI. You’ll only need to pay tuition for 2 years instead of 4. Also, colleges are more lenient with those who come from CC (in fact, there’s been a huge outroar over UCSD accepting so many CC’s and not high schoolers). You’ll have a better chance at getting into a better college and improving your GPA.

eh, I don’t want to opt for CC anymore, if rescinded I’m going for a full time job.

This is what I suggest. Apply to the local CC ASAP as a safety measure.
contact the admissions office, explain to them a reason for poor performance and why it won’t matter in the future. If you can’t think of one, list highly atypical psychological conditions as it’s might be sort of kind of true.
if you are rescinded, go to a CC, do well and transfer. Transferring to UCI is easy if you plan well. Go to [Welcome to ASSIST](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>http://assist.org/) and learn WHAT classes you need to take. AIM for prereq completion + IGETC completion. Also participate in a few(read 1-3 not 50) things related to your field of study and take on a significant role in them. If you don’t know WHAT you want to do, make a list of careers you’re somewhat interested in and a list of majors you’re somewhat interested in, find overlaps in regards to how your major and career paths relate.
Aim for as high of a GPA as possible. I highly suggest aiming for a 3.8+. Aim to be qualified to get into UCLA and UCB and leave UCSD, UCI, UCD, and UCSB as safeties(even if UCI is your first choice as it was for me)

If you’re absolutely clueless as to what you want to do, I humbly suggest accounting(general management is OK but I’d argue accounting is preferred), economics and mathematics as they catch A LOT of careers from consulting to finance to management to marketing to operations… generally speaking if you take one of these courses of study you won’t have to EXPLAIN yourself to an employer as though you’re trying to make up for some deficiency. If you’re passionate about theater or philosophy or history, that is fine, major in that and take on a minor. Or minor in what you’re passionate about. General Economics has relatively few requirements and leaves plenty of room for other avenues of study and is often chosen because of that.

PS. don’t tell mom that you’re rescinded if you are tell her that you’re being financially responsible by going to a CC.

That’s the thing, I feel useless if I don’t get into a college I’ve worked so hard for. I feel like all the work I did in High School just went down the drain. CC is very appealing to me anymore. I thought about it, but the more I think about it, the more disgusted I feel with myself. A full time job may be able to help me get more experience.

Joyfulchute: Maybe it might give you more experience, but in the long run, it will not give you satisfaction. I feel the same way, I felt that going to a CC would be a literal educational suicide. But you know what?-with all your AP credits, you might just have to take 1 year instead of 2. Along with that, enroll in summer courses like I am doing as a just-in-case. Even if I get rescinded, I will go to community college and think of this as a unfair lesson nevertheless-life gives you plenty of s***. UCI was just another school, I feel proud I got in-but it isn’t the school I really want to go to. If I go to a CC, I’m definitely aiming for UCLA which was my first choice school.

Think about it, give it some time. It is your life so I can’t pressure you into anything. Good luck to all your endeavors.

I know I did not get rescinded, but I don’t know if I will have over a 3.0+ GPA due to that one grade last semester. >_>

Just wanted to give a quick update. So I got a 2.4 first semester, and then I worked my butt off and got a 3.0 the second semester. This gives me and average of 2.7. I’ve been contacting admissions counselor, Monique a lot lately. I’ve also been informed that admissions counselors don’t make the decision to withdraw an admission.

That being said, I just hope that somehow, by God’s grace, that I may be able to retain my admission. Monique has told me that my application along with the others who have failed to meet the requirements of the provisional contract will go through something called an “Admissions Offer Withdrawal (AoW)” process. Wish me luck.
