I was accepted as a transfer student on Monday, and I will be entering as a junior. I visited campus for the first time today and got to tour some of the dorms. I have decided that I would like to put down the housing deposit, but was wondering if it's too late?

I want to live in Reynolds, the wellness hall. How hard is it to get in there? My other choices would be Jennie Murphree, Wildwood, DeGraff, or really any of the suite-style dorms.

What are my chances of getting into suite-style as a transfer if I send in my deposit tomorrow morning? Anyone have experience with this?

Also, when do they send back my housing assignment, and most importantly if I don't like where they put me, can I cancel or am I obligated to still live on campus?

As a transfer, you will be eligible for upperclassmen dorms also, as far as I know. Check on that, but it gives you even more options. I do not know if transfers coming in as an upperclassman get any priority over incoming freshman for freshman dorms. But you most definitely have priority over freshman in upperclassman dorms as they cannot apply.

Housing might be able to give you an idea of your chances. Give them a call. Housing assignments for incoming students go out late May or June for fall. I remember D went to orientation with no idea yet where she would be for fall.

You have to CANCEL before you get your assignment. There is a date by which you can cancel and get most of your deposit back. But it is before they give out assignments. This is true for incoming and returning students. After that date, the contract you signed is a valid contract and they will hold you to it, trust me.

There are only 4 choices on the housing agreement, but you can email housing with choices after that in order.

You can sign up online and get a priority number TODAY, and have TEN DAYS to actually get the deposit in before they cancel your number. I'd get a number today, and call housing on Monday.

Thanks for the info sunnyflorida! I've been trying to get on the housing website all last night and this morning, but it's been down. I called the help desk @ FSU and they said no one will be in until Monday morning... it is extremely frustrating to have to wait all weekend when I know I need to get in line for housing now.

So has anyone been in this situation as far as transfer housing goes? If so, when did you apply, and where were you placed? Also, in general, do most students get in at least one of their top choices, or is very likely to get in a dorm you didn't even list?

Yes, I find housing to be down. BUT, if you can't get a number, neither can anyone else!!! So you are OK.

I'd say, go for housing. Reynolds is the wellness dorm, and you sign that you will not be drinking during your stay, not in the dorm, not out of the dorm, not even when you are home on break. So there are not as many interested in Reynolds. That is a plus for you. And since Jeannie Murphree is all girls, that is not in huge demand either. I KNOW THERE WERE FRESHMAN LAST YEAR assigned JM that did not request it. So....for your that is also a plus.

My opinion? Between having a leg up on Reynolds and Murphree, and being eligible for the upperclassman Ragans and McCollum, I think you will get what you want.

AND, as soon as assignments come out, if it is not to your liking, you can immediately submit a change request. There is always a bit of a shuffle, there are returning students who do not end up returning (and they do get released from their contracts.) There are also freshman with assignments who end up not enrolling (they may get in somewhere else off a wait list late) and rooms open up after you get your first assignment;and if your are persistent, I suspect you will be where you want to be in the end. Because something tells me you will have an advantage over incoming freshman anyway.

I really wanted to tour some dorms yesterday but I completely overlooked it on the preview schedule and thought that they weren't doing dorm tours.. So we just left when we had no more business to take care of.

Rosa could you please tell me what you liked about those dorms?

I will also be waiting till after Orientation. Hopefully we will be able to get the dorms we prefer. I hope I won't be late. Does anyone here have the pro's and con's of the dorms.

There are quite a few threads in the FSU section here on dorms. Use the search function and use dorms and the FSU forum, or just page back and look.
