on-campus interview?

has anyone here had an on-campus interview? how did it go? i have one coming up, so I was just wondering kind of what to expect. it will be my first college interview, so i'm a little bit nervous. I really want it to go well :)

My daughter had an on-campus interview and thought it was pretty relaxed. As much discussion about Carleton as about her interests. Interviewer caught her attention when he said Carleton was for nerds - those who are passionate about learning.

Good luck!

As with fireflyscout's D, my D had a very comfortable interview with an admissions person who was in his late 20's. She spent about 45 minutes with him. Afterwards, he invited my husband into the conversation for about another 1/2 hour. Carleton is definitely looking for students who are deeply interested in learning and who do not back down from challenge. Relax, be yourself, and enjoy your conversation. D is now a sophomore - working her tail off in the sciences and loving it!

I have an interview tomorrow with an Alum in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Pretty excited/nervous too!

D got a letter from Carleton yesterday saying that there are no alumni admissions representatives in our area with whom to interview but giving her the names and telephone numbers of an '86 and a '92 grad, both women, and saying that she should feel free to contact one of them to request a telephone interview. One of the them majored in political science and the other majored in history. My daughter wants to major in a science discipline. While I think she should call, my D is reluctant to do so, in part because the questions she would like to ask most concern women majoring in Physics or Biology. The letter says interviews are not required. How important is this?

D is very interested in Carleton but we have not yet visited the campus which is about 1900 miles from us. Another question we have concerns how far we are from Minnesota. If D attends she will only be able to come home on quarter breaks. Are there very many other students at Carleton who are there every weekend?

I interviewed on campus back when I applied. I was interested in learning about Carleton's math and physics departments...and my interviewer was a history major. I ended up asking questions about academics in a more general sense and stuff about campus life and saved my specific math/physics questions for talking to people in the department, so it all worked out, but to Invirginia: if your daughter wants to know more information about specific departments, there are student departmental assistants for every major and they would be a very good source of information. All the SDA's are listed at http://apps.carleton.edu/campus/doc/advising/directory/sda/ and to email them, just append @carleton.edu to what it says their email usernames are. There are female contacts who are current seniors at Carleton for both physics and biology, actually, so I would encourage your daughter to email them with questions.

Also to Invirginia, remember, most students are from out-of-state. The geographical distribution for current freshman is at http://apps.carleton.edu/global_stock/photostock/152524_orig.jpg and you can clearly see that most students aren't in easy driving distance of Minnesota. Even students who live a few hours away don't go home on the weekends that often. Carleton is not one of those schools where people scatter on the weekends. We don't get days off for national holidays, and the only break each trimester happens halfway through when we get a Monday off. People sometimes use that time to go do something like camping (weather permitting), but out-of-state students don't go home during even that time. I live about 1,800 miles away from Carleton and I don't find it an issue at all since most people I know are in the same boat.

I think my interview went fairly well.

I didn't really ask him too many questions because I already knew so much about the college from current students and emailing my interviewer. (I've had erratic contact with my interviewer since November.)

I'm from Arkansas.....and 1000 miles away from the college. Even though I'm closer than you (invirginia).....I will probably visit it my parents rarely too....(only on major breaks). Truthfully, that's part of the reason why I want to attend......I'm ready to be semi-independent. At least, that's what I think right now.

The map that useatoothbrush posted is pretty interesting. Only 1 from Arkansas!

My son's interview was on campus with an assistant admisssions person. It was very low-key. They describe it as a "get to know you" session. Parents were invited in 1/2 way through.

By the way, my son was accepted ED I and will be attending. He is one of those "nerds" passionate for learning and the fit is there. I think the admissions guy saw that.

So there's nothing to be nervous about. Be yourself. They are simply looking for the fit. And if you don't fit, why would you want to go there?

I just found out I might be able to make the trek up north :)

Do I still have time to schedule an interview?

i would try to call and schedule one, but do it soon, today if you can, because on their online visit schedule, it says that the last day for on-campus interviews is Jan. 16th. But maybe they will make an exception since you are coming from out of state. It wouldn't hurt to call and ask! Even if you can't get an interview, they still have tours and group info. sessions, etc. going on later in January, or you can attend a class, stay overnight, etc. -- doing any of these things will show interest, and with small schools like Carleton, I'm pretty sure they keep track of who takes the time to visit and such. I would check the calendar that they have online, and then call right away and schedule your visit.
Off campus interview question:

I requested an on campus interview and they sent me a letter with two names to reply to. Did any of you get a letter with 2 different alums listed?

Whew... sigh of relief! I had my interview today, and I thought it went wonderfully! I was a little bit nervous because my sister told me that I would probably be interviewed by a student, but instead I was interviewed by the Senior Dean of Admissions! But he was very nice and funny, and I felt very comfortable. I'm so happy about how it went! Good luck to all of you if you have an interview coming up, just relax and you'll do great! And it will feel so awesome when you're done :) Best of luck!
