Does anyone know which places on campus generally hire students over the summer? I plan on staying in Maryland to work on my Gemstone team's research, but that involves renting an apartment. Plus I'll be bored (I can't take summer classes as an out of state student because they are almost 1000 a credit).
I've been trying to find any sort of grant that allows undergrads to work on research over the summer, but what I've found is restricted to engineering/science majors. (I have an English major with my pre-med classes.

Also I don't have the personality to be an Orientation Advisor. There is one OA who has set the bar far too high in terms of overall happiness. (I'm assuming everyone who's gone through summer orientation in the past two years knows who I'm talking about)

It may be well worth your while to work as a nonpaid undergraduate research assistant, or other volunteer work that you feel strongly about that meshes well with your future goals (over and above your Gemstone research). Although it won’t go far in terms of paying your rent , if you still plan to continue towards med school, the different experience will help out a lot, and may help you focus on what you want to do long-term. You can probably get something on campus, or you may be able to lend your writing expertise in terms of grant-writing for a non-profit in the area (including to DC). You may have to supplement with some paying (but relatively mindless) job to take care of that annoying rent/eating “thing”, but it may be well worth it.

I assume you’ve already looked into this site,
[Undergraduate Research - University of Maryland](Maryland Summer Scholars | Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research)

If it’s too late for any of these, you could approach professors with whom you’ve had good experiences and ask them for suggestions/contacts, although at this point it would all-but-guaranteed to be unpaid.

Good luck!

(haha, about the OA personality! For anyone considering it in the future… FYI, you would have had to submit your application in September last year for this coming summer…the training includes a course that you take the 2nd semester… D2 has the best world–she does a lot of the behind-the-scenes work for Orientations, so she has less face-time with students…she has less time where she has to be cheerful and perky in public!!!)
