On-campus living for newly admitted Grad student?

Hey everybody....I was just recently admitted to grad school at FSU and wondering if it would be better to live on-campus for grad school (Ragans Hall is full so next available is Rogers Hall). I was told I will be spending 24/7 in my school/department..

Advantages for Rogers Hall:
-can walk to class and library and everywhere needed for my studies
-no parking issues
-no wear and tear on my car
-can walk to gym on campus
-cheap and no lease

I've been commuting the last 4 years for undergrad and the thing I hated most was having to drive back and forth to the library for study groups, studying, using the lab, etc.

However, my only option at FSU is living in Roger Hall which Ive heard isnt so great. Everything else is taken. And Alumni Village is off campus..I might as well get a room off campus thats cheaper.

Does anybody know how Rogers Hall is?

Hey man, Rogers isn’t located in the best of places on campus, its pretty far on the West Side. This may not be a problem if youre going to mostly spend your time in the science buildings. It really depends, you end up sharing a room and im sure that’s not the most fun when your a grad student. What price were they going to give you monthly for Rogers?

If anything, there are several walkable off campus apartments near the West Side.

The rate is $435 at Rogers Hall and according to the site, its for 2 people. I have been looking at off-campus apartments that need roommates but everytime I read the reviews they talk about how a lot of partying happens till 4am, as well as management being horrible.

I’ll be going to Tallahassee this week to look at some rooms for rent ($450-500 average rent) in houses but they’re 10-15 min away from campus. If Rogers Hall is that bad, than I’ll stay off campus. I just wasnt sure how bad Rogers Hall.

Either I stay at Rogers Hall, suck it up at a close-by apartment with parties going on all the time, or drive 10 min to campus and deal with the parking.

Sorry if it sounds like im complaining…not trying to…just anxious I guess.

I would probably say your best bet is a 4am party complex. Apartment parties in my experience don’t last till 4AM because TPD has a way of shutting them down :frowning: Roger’s is so/so, but my biggest qualm would still be living with a roommate in one bedroom. That’s fine when your an undergrad but im sure grad students really want their own room. Good luck on your search. 400-500 should be your AVG price.

I’d go with Rogers. I do not think it is bad, at least it wasn’t years ago. Try to get a single. The convenience of being on campus and the ability to get some sleep when you need it outweighs a lot. You can come back to the dorm for a shower, a nap, some food…whatever, without the fight for a parking spot.

Thanks Sid and P2N. I’ll definitely visit Rogers Hall this week and consider it. I know a lot of grad students prefer to live off campus but as busy as I am, walking to class, then back to my room for lunch/dinner, then off to the gym, then a shower, and back to class makes it much easier. I’ll ask about a single room too.

You can always make the living room an other bedroom.
