On Hold Experiences

^^Same here. Thanks for the heads up. Ouchie.

Ya, that was a tough one. Good vibes to the rest of the “on hold” kids.

My D received a no on the website today. She was on hold after the LA unifieds. She now has 2 yes’s, 2 no’s, 1 hold, 1 wait and 5 unknowns that should be decided by March 15th

Sorry about the no’s everyone…but on a happy note, when I check the list of acceptances, your kids have been admitted into some phenomenal programs! I am living nervously and vicariously through you all (my D is a junior), but if she gets into just ONE of the programs you and/or your kids have, we will be ecstatic! As long as you have one yes, you can - to a certain extent- breathe easy. While every no hurts, I just want to congratulate you on the yes’s.

thanks monkey13. that’s the mantra we all keep repeating to our kids, and of course you’re right that they only need ONE acceptance. It is a complex, emotional journey. You’re smart to be starting now…do as much research as you can!

monkey13,
This is off topic for this forum – but one thing that helped my son immensely was getting an early “Yes” from a program with a Nov. audition where they do rolling acceptances. He had an acceptance in early December - and thru the long dark winter and then as he left and soldiered thru Unifieds he knew he would be going to college somewhere …so one piece of advice I leave others is to try and go to at least one early audition in such a program.
Of course it could have gone the other way too with an early rejection - but then we would have learned something from that, too.

Thanks, Santafedad. That’s good advice and we are planning on doing that. I’m a little anal, and I have this spread sheet…well, you can imagine. So we know which schools among the 13 she is interested in have those early auditions/decisions, and we are going to try to do at least one. I think that would be a huge relief, to have something like that in your back pocket. Of course, my D says if she does not get in anywhere, she is going to take her college money, go to NYC, take lessons, waitress, and audition, audition, audition. That scares me, but I admire her determination. I am hoping she will get in SOMEWHERE, but we won’t know until next year! Would you mind telling me which program your S got into? I may have missed one!!! Thx.

Thanks - assumed as much, but wanted to confirm with others. Several other options available, thankfully. Just disappointing not to get CCM.

How many people in this group have used MTCA to prepare for auditions? My son did and I can’t recommend them enough.

Really, jdm7194? I’ve been looking into MTCA and didn’t know much about it. I’m super interested in using them when I get closer to time for my auditions (I’m a junior)

Not to hijack this thread, but MTCA working with them is the best thing we’ve done throughout this whole process! They are fantastic in every way . . . they truly care about their kids and have helped my D tremendously. If you want more information, send me an email via CC. I will be happy to sing their praises. :0)

We’re doing MTCA too, and we love it! My D does most of her sessions via Skype.

Yeah! I emailed them a few weeks ago and they gave me rates and other information. Then they set me up with someone to work with but I haven’t followed through yet. Who was your S’s instructor, jdm7194? Evidently he knows how to get a fella into CCM.

All of the people associated with the MTCA team are wonderful! They are dedicated to helping your child attain the best possible outcome. If it weren’t for Ellen, I don’t know how I would have gotten thru this process. What an emotional roller-coaster. They truly get to know your kid and match songs and monologues to play to their strengths. Of course, they cannot guarantee the outcome. As you can see, the competition in this field is fierce . I highly recommend MTCA but start earlier than later. The other thing about them is they will help you to devise a strong list individual to you child. If they feel certain schools are too ambitious, they will guide you to others. They work together as a team to help your child be as successful as possible in this process.

Amen dramaqueenmoma, monkey13, and kksmom. MTCA has been a great experience for our son and for my wife and me. MTCA was such a God send!

This is interesting, if not a bit concerning. Coaches at MTCA have an “in” at CCM? Do these coaches make calls on behalf of the student they are coaching, or pick songs that have been specifically recommended, or have any influence on the decision making process? Or do you just mean they know what CCM is looking for and design an audition package to suit the school’s taste? Then maybe get lucky?
We have been resistant to paying what we considered to be expensive rates for these types of services. Including a prominent Broadway casting director who coaches. I hope we don’t regret having not known how the game is played in advance. We are on hold for CCM having not used one of these services. At this point could they use their influence to make a difference in who gets an offer?

I might have missed something DaddyW, but I didn’t read that coaches at MTCA have an “in” at CCM or anywhere else. They do not have any influence at any schools about their selection process. I believe they know some of the professors - for example, my son’s coaches went to UM and Carnegie Mellon. I do believe they know something about most of the schools and try to tailor the student’s selections so they can give their best audition possible. It can be a little expensive but it’s so competitive that I think it was money well spent to give my son any advantage.

I may be a bit naive, but I am pretty sure that coaches have absolutely NO influence over the decisions made at CCM or any other school.

What they do is, from their years of experience, know the culture of the different schools and the “types” of students (if there is one) that those schools tend to prefer and guide their students toward those schools where in their opinion, the students would be a better fit.

They also tend to have a vast knowledge of MT repertoire and might be able to suggest songs and monologues that the students aren’t familiar with.

But I do NOT believe they make phone calls to the auditors attempting to influence their decisions. And I would be pretty disappointed in any school that made their decisions based on recommendations from any coach rather than on the audition they witnessed themselves!

I think tracyvp is correct. But after years of seeing who gets in where, they get a good idea. But they will make no guarantees. They will have you as ready as you can be. They will tell you what schools you have no chance of getting in. We have friends using coaches this year and some have made a lot of posts on the MT Rejections threads. Some have no acceptances they are happy with. Some have lots.

I believe IsaacMT was being cheeky, not being serious.
