I'm a pretty good student, generally in the 90s, lots of APs, ECs, etc. This year, Senior year, I'm taking ten classes. We just got our first marking period grades which go on our transcript.

Gym- 80 (don't think they care)
AP Lit- 82 (I got a low 90 in language last year...)
AP Latin-83 (I was a 99 student in normal Latin, so Idk if that'll impact me...)
Leadership- 85
AP Studio Art- 85
AP Microeconomics- 90
Latin TA- 99
English TA- 100
Art TA- 100
Math Team- 65.

I have NEVER gotten a 65 before. The other grades are kinda' low, but I don't think they'll hurt me as much as this 65. There is a huge issue with this 65 to the point where I'm going to the Math Department and whatnot, but I've been told that most likely, 99% chance, the grade won't be taken off.

These are the schools I'm applying to:

MIT
Harvard
Yale
BU
Wake Forest
Purdue
University of Colorado
University of Michigan
Indiana University-Bloomington
Idaho State University

Am I totally screwed because of one 65 now? I plan on dropping my Leadership class (it's at the same time as Math Team, taking Math Team everyday SHOULD boost my average but it won't get rid of the 65.) Or, my Math Team class if she makes me. (she's been trying to kick me out for some time now.) I HAVE to drop one of them now, since my Math Team teacher is forcing me (by giving me a 65 in her class.)

The reason I got a 65 in Math Team was b/c I have it two days a week, which she LET me do. I missed some days cuz I was absent/late, and supposedly that made me get a 65, while everyone else had a base grade of 85 even if they failed all the tests (I did get some questions right!) If I drop Leadership, I take Math Team everyday, which gets me a base grade of 85. /Supposedly./ So if I stay, it looks like I improved by getting at least 20 points more and it looks good… right?

Also, if I drop Math Team, that 65 doesn’t disappear :(

You’re screwed for MIT Harvard and Yale no matter what you do at this point. Your severe drop in grades this semester is going to kill your chances.

Other than that, I’d say drop leadership and all of the TAs so that you can focus on your real classes.

Looking at your chance thread you have a 1570/2400 SAT so BU, Wake Forest, and University of Michigan are basically out of reach. Everything else on your list seems to be a high match/reach (except possibly Idaho State which may be a match), you should try to find some safeties.

The only colleges on your list that you can realistically make are Colorado, Indiana, Idaho, and maybe Purdue. And also isn’t TA just like helping your teacher? How is that class graded/count towards your gpa? lol

Oh ok that helps a lot! Your list (minus HYM) is sort of reasonable then. And sorry I have no idea about Idaho State, I just googled the SAT ranges. Good luck!

As long as I can make SOMETHING, I’m happy. And as a TA, sometimes we have to teach the students. Either way, we’re graded. The school made most Seniors do it to keep them in school, and because we’re poor and the teachers are struggling. Of course, no one would WANT to be a TA, so they decided to grade us. I also don’t want to drop TA since it’s an easy 100 and grade boost, and we don’t do much so I can get work done during those periods.

I’m just super worried that I won’t get anywhere right now.

My report card average was still a 93, while my overall is a 94, so the 65 didn’t impact it much… but I still need to get it off. I also have another teacher coming to defend me ._.

@napalm: Thanks a lot! So do you think I’m still okay with this grade drop for all the other schools besides HYM?

Google the Common Data Set for each of these schools and go to Section C. Compare your stats to those of the admitted students. You’ll know immediately what your chances are at these schools. And yes, omit MIT, Harvard and Yale. University of Michigan, Wake Forest and BU may also be off the table unless your test scores go up significantly. Again, the Common Data Set is your best source of information.

How did you come up with this list of schools? What criteria are you using? This isn’t a coherent list at all and I’m concerned for you.

Wake Forest doesn’t look at SAT scores… I don’t see why everyone’s making a big deal out of that one…

I didn’t say these were all matches, I aim pretty high but I added in some safeties just in case. I don’t see how it’s not coherent… I also used Cappex and it said I had a pretty good chance at these schools except the top four.

Also, I wasn’t planning to apply for BU, but I’m good at (or was good at) Latin, so I decided to take their scholarship test. They have the stuff I want to major in, so it’s not like I made that choice irrationally.

Either way, it’s too late to change this list and what matters is that /I’m/ happy with it, everyone’s a critic here so I’m just ignoring what everyone says about my choices. (not my chances at them, but other things.)

Also, if I happen to get rejected from all of them (which I doubt since one of them is open admissions), I’ll just go to my local community college since they accept everyone. No big deal.
