I'm a CCC student and have finished everything needed for my IGETC, have over 70 units...except the transferrable math requirement.

I'm an Anthro major and dont really need math truthfully and i mention this cause im extremely struggling in that class, yet have applied to 6 of all the UC's and USC as well.

Would my CCC really not give a damn and make me stay a whole 'nother year at that CCC just for not completing one class; a class i dont really need for my major? The way im seeing it is that i've done pretty much the majority of all the classes offered at CCC and another year taking frivolous electives would be just a waste of time.

I've approached my math teacher and she told me to visit her during her office hours for help in math but im struggling big time.

I know im ranting her about a situation i can control, but its just that time is drawing nearer and am already getting acceptance letters from UC's and the possibility of failing this last math class is freaking me out.

They can’t just leave me hangin like this…

…can they?

Yes, the UCs will rescind any offer of admission if you do not complete your college-level math requirement for transfer. For that matter, the CSUs are exactly the same way.

It is not your CCC that would be “making you stay” – rather, the UCs and CSUs will rescind any offers. Put another way, let’s say that UC Davis and SFSU offer you admission. Their offer will state in some language that you MUST maintain an XX.X GPA and pass ALL of your current classes. The CSUs will very specifically state you must pass your 4 basics (of which one is math).

I know someone who had gotten in as a transfer to UC Davis and passed all his required classes with flying colors. However, he dropped a fluff class that spring at his CCC thinking it didn’t matter. That dropped him below the 60 units required for transfer to a UC. His offer was RESCINDED! Think about it - he had already passed his classes… he was just a few fluff credits (electives) short and Davis gave him the ax. This was last spring.

So - you are best off directly contacting the UCs and asking what their policy would be if you failed the math class. I suspect in today’s climate that you will receive bad news as the UCs and CSUs are having to be very strict about very minor details.

A good note - for some majors, I believe USC does NOT require a transferable math - but check into that detail.

Hire a really effective tutor and pass your math class. Like you said, you’d be stuck waiting an entire year for the next transfer cycle if you fail the math class. Better off paying out a few hundred dollars now on effective tutoring (multiple times per week if necessary). Your prof may try to help but it isn’t his/her job to do remedial tutoring.

This is why it isn’t a good idea to wait until the last semester to take transfer math - a cautionary note to others for certain.

And one final note - I realize you are in panic mode or rant mode - but the argument of “I really don’t need math for my major” is not going to be effective for getting sympathy from admins. There are entire threads devoted to why colleges have math requirements with pros and cons. But for the forseeable future, UCs and CSUs are going to stick with it.

Good luck!

This is what happened to me today! I was accepted into Berkeley last month and I have been in community for 3 years. I got a D in stats (teacher was harsh also) and just earlier today my acceptance was rejected. I had to pass all my classes with 3.00 and pass with a C or higher. So now I am stuck in community for another year…arggggg! I don’t mean to discourage people but it can happen so be careful…please!

Iamarock, so you’re gonna spend a whole year at CCC just for that one class?
