My son's high school has several very competitive and able students invited to the scholarship interview. Rumor has that only one trustee scholarship recipient per high school. Is there any truth to it?

I think it seems unlikely since each individual major/school at USC administers their own interviews, fills the panels, and makes the determinations for their department’s Trustee scholars independently. I can’t imagine that they then have to check all the other schools (i.e., clas, marshall, sca, thornton, et al) to coordinate such a restriction. Even within clas, for example, why discriminate among students at this elite level? Since USC’s incentive to give out big merit awards is to entice top students to attend, such a concern with sending high schools seems beside their main point. In other words, they are not trying to spread trustee awards around to a lot of HS’s- and these are not in lieu of FinAid or any other consideration.

Sometimes rumors crop up when those outside the system cannot make sense of who gets awarded top honors and who does not. Just my take.

haha reading this reminded me last week when during the trustee 2 session like 14 of the 154 kids or something were from the same school and i was like whoa.

but no, itd be stupid to eliminate qualified scholarship finalists just cuz they go to the same school.

I’m pretty sure my kids’ HS had more than one trustee/year from their HS. They definitely had MANY presidential merit scholars from their HS, as did the other HI prep school that sends lots of kids to USC.

Nope. When I was at USC there were 2 from my school offered the Trustee and some schools, especially the top SoCal schools had many more than 2.

There were multiple from my son’s school as well. Does anyone know the percentage of those who interview for Trustee and for Presidential that actually get that award? I know some will bump up…but what percentage don’t get anything?

^If they don’t get the scholarship, i think they’re bumped down one level… so you’re still guaranteed at least a dean’s scholarship iirc.

Hi momhere!

College Confidential is a very small sampling, but in watching the posts here I have never seen a post by a student interviewed for Trustee or Presidential who wasn’t awarded at least a Dean’s (as Arctic92 says). I have seen a very few who post that they were bumped from Presidential to Trustee. Also a few saying they were bumped the other way - from Trustee to Presidential or from Presidential to Dean’s. And I saw one very sad post from an applicant who was bumped all the way from Trustee to Dean’s.

It could be that students not awarded the scholarships are so disappointed that they do not return to post the negative results, so take this with a grain of salt.
