I just took the SAT for the third time hoping that with a score over 2100 it would be my final time. I got a 2090. I was thinking about taking it a fourth time but have frequently heard that colleges look down taking the test more than three times. I even heard that some start averaging. I really am forced with a dilemma and even though I want a better score is it worth risking a bad rep on my application?

Where do you plan on applying, and I assume you are a junior? I doubt there is much difference between 2090 and 2100… By the time you get to the top collleges they want around 2200 or more. Or something like that.

Have you tried combining your best test scores from all your sections? So if you got 2000 overall last time but 760 on math, and this time you got 2090 but 720 on math, you can use the math test score from last time. Also, did you send out all your test scores already? If not, you can choose which ones to send to the colleges. So you don’t have to send all three tests if one is lower in all the sections.
Also, try taking the ACTs. You get to avoid taking the SAT subject tests, and some people do better on ACT than SAT.

well each time I improved so my latest 2090 sitting has the highest in all the sections…
yeah, I took the ACT but don’t feel too confident about it. Should I just try and improve my ACT scores instead?

Well it depends on what you got on your SAT subject tests. If you have trouble with both reasoning and subject tests, then you might as well just concentrate on improving your ACT scores instead of concentrating on both SAT reasoning and subject tests. But if you have stellar subject tests and just some problems with the reasoning, then I would suggest to continue on the reasoning since it seems you already put into a lot of effort into it and probably got all the prep books and such. Plus if you’re consistently improving, and if you prefer SAT then just retake SAT then send them your highest test score. No one will know how many times you took it.

well the scores I’m interested in applying to next year have the following procedure for Score Choice:

<university x=“”> has indicated that it considers all SAT scores in its
review process and requires that you submit all SAT scores from all
test dates.</university>

It depends on the pattern of your scores. If you have made a 2060, 2070, 2090, its probably not worth it (unless all you care about is the 2100, but I would try to exceed 2100 a bit more). Also if that is your raw score w/o prep, I would consider a mini session specializing in maybe one or two areas that have potential of making a difference in your score.

Ok, I would definitely retake it. Your multiple scores should help you. Even though your first one was semi-low, it shows that you have grown. You ended up at a pretty could score and it’s a great trend-your scores increase over 100 pts each time- what I think is a perfect example of someone who retakes it! Your next score could put you in place at those top schools.
