I used verisimilitude as a synonym for truth/honesty in my March 2009 Essay..I used it in my first line, now I realized I spelled it verissimilitude...with two s's....anyways, I wrote a really good essay (lol the other parts)..do you think graders will pick up on the mistake? I know they read very fast...If they do, will it knock me down from a 6 to a 5?

According to the College Board:

SCORE OF 6
An essay in this category demonstrates clear and consistent mastery, although it may have a few minor errors. A typical essay

effectively and insightfully develops a point of view on the issue and demonstrates outstanding critical thinking, using clearly appropriate examples, reasons, and other evidence to support its position

is well organized and clearly focused, demonstrating clear coherence and smooth progression of ideas

exhibits skillful use of language, using a varied, accurate, and apt vocabulary
demonstrates meaningful variety in sentence structure

is free of most errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics

Notice the word, MOST. That does not mean ALL. So if that was the only mistake, then they don't knock you down.

one spelling mistake, especially one that is hard to notice, definitely shouldn't affect your grade. A trend of misspelling, on the other hand, could lower your score. I wouldn't worry about it, esspecially because you can't change it now. (I put an extra 's' in especially earlier. Did it change your understanding of the sentence, or how you regarded it?)

the graders spend 1 minute on your essay. it would be nearly impossible for the grader to notice

And there's the answer to the question. =)

this is a joke... right?

You also misspelled the title of this topic.

you'll be fine

Seriously???

lol...mispelling one word won't doom you. Although I think you should atleast try to spell, mispell right?

^ lol I was going to say something about that.

I didn't spell the title of this discussion...My original title was just "OOPS"...but a moderator must have written "Misspeled a word in my essay" and spelled misspelled wrong...So, I didn't misspell misspell :)

I carelessly misspelled "reckless" as "wreckless" in mine. Hopefully they won't notice that, either.

Technically, they AREN'T supposed to dock you a point. But all readers are subjective someway, so if they actually catch it and one of the reader is a psychotic spelling teacher, he/she would dock you off. But then again, I doubt the readers would notice unless it's by luck(bad luck in your case)?

^Lol? These aren't random teachers who do whatever the hell they want. Sure, all readers may have a pinch of subjectivity, but even contemplating action for misspelling a hard word is way beyond subjectivity, that's just being an all around dumbass.

On the other hand, I find misspelling easy words to be a sign of ignorance and lack of intellectual capacity. Maybe that's just me.

Either way, this thread is joke.

I wouldn't worry about it. Even top scorers make spelling errors.

I misspelled the first word in my essay and I got an 11.

I don't think so, if you only misspelled one word. I don't think it's enough to knock you down an entire score.
