OOS RD Chances?

So this is my last week at school to get college crap into my counselor. I've been freaking out and researching colleges like crazy to try and see if there were any other schools I liked. I stumbled upon Virginia and the Echols program. That program seems ideal to me... I think that's what college should be. But I don't know if I'd get accepted to the school, let alone the program. Also, if I got into the school and didn't get into Echols, how hard is it to transfer?

Finally, if I do get in I don't think I can front the $30k out of state price tag. How Is Viriginia with aid for upper-middle class kids?

I mean I have some other good safe plans (free ride at UF, not ranked too much lower than VA). But if I were accepted into Echols with a decent aid package, I would definitely consider it.

Be as honest as you can with me... tell me my chances for acceptance into the school and to Echols.

Thanks a lot!

And about the music... I'm at a semi-pro level. I play union gigs and make union wages for my bass-playing. So it's not like I'm some punk rocker trying to act legit... haha.

I think you have a pretty good chance.

Generally OOS students are in the top 5% of their class. You would need to improve your GPA, and your SAT scores are somewhat average for an OOSer. The program wouldn't be for you- that's usually reserved to the top 5% of applicants or so (taking into account the Instate/out of state ratio).

I'm not disagreeing with you... but my school is an IB magnet. I think they might take that into account. I'd be in top 5 (students, not percent) if I wasn't at an IB magnet for sure. But I know what you're trying to say. I read that the average SAT score was 1480 (what I have) so I knew it could go either way.

All the info on Echols

<a href="http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/echols/echadmfaqs.html%5B/url%5D">http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/echols/echadmfaqs.html</a></p>

Woah the average SAT score for OoS is 1480? Or is that for your program?

Well, the OOS average is pretty high. Maybe it's not that high but regardless the SAT score won't make much of a difference with the tons of other OOSers applying with a similar SAT but with a 5% class rank.

There are tons of IB students who apply, and a lot of them can be top 5 in any other school for sure. I could have been at least salutatorian at any other school in my district if I didn't do IB. The IB course load will be taken into account because it is more difficult than an average course load, but plenty of students are applying with similar workloads regardless, and are able to achieve top 5% class ranks. You have a shot, but it's not likely for OOS, let alone for Echols.

Haha guess I shouldn't have been so lazy in high school... Guess playing the "I'm lazy but really intelligent" card doesn't always work...

I'm not gonna bother applying I don't think. The aid package won't be as good as UF, and although VA is ranked higher... it isn't worth that much money that I don't have.

Maybe for grad school...

Thanks though, guys!
