OOS Scholarship

I've been going back and forth on waiting to hear from the UCs, since I'm a CA resident. But I absolutely love U of O. Probably the prettiest college I've visited and the people in Oregon seem so friendly. So just when I get an acceptance from one of the UCs I applied to, I received a Dean's Scholarship from U of O. It says out of state dean's scholarship of at least $3,000 for 4 years (with minimum GPA, etc.). Actual amount sent April 1st. What does that mean? Does anyone know what amount, if any, over the $3,000?

I'm wondering because OOS tuition is so high, it will be a bit of a stretch for my parents, even though they make a lot of money (expenses in So. Cal. kind of counteract the money they actually make).

It's either 5 or 6K/yr max.

Congrats!

Did you hear today?
What did the envelope look like?
Sorry, but I've been waiting to hear for months now.

Thanks for letting me know. That helps.

I received a letter -- slim envelope, with just two pages, one with congrats, and the second with a list of what you have to do to maintain the scholarship. Received it Thurs.

I must not have gotten one then. Blah.
My choice of college is being made for me by default.
I feel so out of control of my own future.

The range is up to $5K. I know two out-of-state students who received this award; one received $5K/year and the other $3K. Both attended the same high school. I think it is merit-based award and actual award may depend on your scores, etc.

Thanks Eastbaymom!

Reddog, you were accepted, right?

Beatchick have you heard about the Western Undergraduate Exchange program. It is where you pay 1 and 1/2 times the instate tuition. Oregon is part of this program, so the overall cost should be cheaper than the UC's, since housing costs are nearly double.

Accepted early September, visited, did the application, met the SAT minimum to be considered for Dean's and by midterm, I had the GPA. No likely letter though. I'm into good schools, don't get me wrong, but there was just something about U of O. Parents won't go for a full pay plus the $$ of travel. I called and they said thye'd already mailed out the letter you got to the people who were going to get Dean's. I may be eleigible for a General University Scholarship 500-2,000/yr and they'll let me know in April. My essay must have been lousy.

DD also received the letter indicating that she was awarded the U of O Dean's Scholarship. We are also waiting for the Diversity-Building scholarship notification.

SoCal 18,

Yes, I specifically asked them about it when I was up there last summer, and so far, the ONLY Oregon school allowing residents of CA to use the WUE is Southern Oregon University. U of O said no, not yet, and I re-confirmed it with them a few months ago when their rep was visiting down here. That would have been GREAT if they were doing that, but not for 2007 freshmen, they said.

Oh that sucks...well I hope your scholarship will work out for you.

The benefits of the WUE program is greatly overrated when it comes to the Oregon schools. The list of participating colleges is limited and I believe that Oregon State University and U of Oregon restrict applicants to a few specific majors. That is, you won't be admitted through WUE if your intended major is an impacted or restricted major at the Oregon colleges.

Just to update this a bit, I got my scholarship award (oos) and it was $4,000 a year. Nice and helpful, for sure. Downside is I got into a bunch of UCs (including Berkeley) so it looks like I'll be staying in state. But I just wanted to tell everyone who hasn't been to University of Oregon to visit, GO! It is so beautiful and the people are soo nice. I definitely would have gone if I didn't have these other opportunities I can't pass up.

i too received the dean's scholarship, but i also got WUE (i live in nevada). you have to pick one or the other, and WUE equals out to be about 12,000, so obviously that's the one i picked. i wish i could get the dean's scholarship on top of it.

i can also pick any major i want, not just the specific WUE majors, because i was also accepted to the clark honors college.

Good luck Beatchick. Oregon is out for me too. Unfortunately, my Fin-Aid Office letter came today with a dollar amount that matches the University logo: "O"

Does anyone know if the minimum gpa to receive a dean's scholarships is 3.6 weighted or unweighted? I could not find that info on the website.
If anybody receiving a scholarship this year would be willing to share their stats that may help my d evaluate her chances for next year. Thanks and good luck to all of you whereever you end up!

Sure, PA mom. My GPA was at the time I applied 3.86 unweighted (we don't have honors or ap classes at my school). After fall semester, it climbed to 3.9. If you call the admissions office, they'll tell you if it's weighted or unweighted. They are very nice.

My son got accepted to U of O, but we’re OOS and can’t swing those costs without merit aid, as we’re unlikely to get much need=based help. I wonder why so many institutional scholarships are for in=state kids when their costs are relatively low to begin with? This year they raised OOS tuition by $5,000 with no apparent increase in merit aid. I would love for it to work out to go there, but $34k a year is steep!

I feel your pain, collegeyikes. My daughter is OOS at another university as a freshman this year. While the $30K+ price tag is a shocker, we did the math versus our in-state schools (we’re in California) and it didn’t end up being that dramatically different. At least at OOS schools like Indiana (where my daughter is) and Oregon students can actually get the classes they need to graduate in four years, which is not something that happens very often anymore in California. As my daughter has compared notes this winter break with her in-state freshman friends, she’s become even more pleased with her choice.

My daughter was accepted to UO last year and she did get an offer of $5K/year in merit aid. I can’t remember when the letter came, but hang in there. Maybe your son will get a letter with some aid soon.

My daughter (in-state) received merit aid too, but did not receive the letter informing her of that until May 1st. Hang in there.
