Does anyone know if University of Michigan gives out any merit based full rides or large scholarships for out of state students??
No one we know has gotten a merit award from Michigan from out of state. This cycle my daughter’s schools’ valedictorian with perfect stats was wait listed (my daughter too). If your chasing merit money, northern flagships are notoriously stingy.
Oh okay, that’s unfortunate. thank you!!
There are a very few VERY competitive scholarships awarded to OOS students at UMich. But the school really is transitioning to a school that provides primarily need based aid.
Do you not qualify for need based aid?
I don’t believe I do… I come from about $125,000 a year… @thumper1
Stamp is full ride and Shipman is half. They are very hard to get though. You can google them and hope they are still there! Also there are some smaller scholarships awarded by different schools. A lot of them have a need factor.
Can you explain the need based income thresholds at Michigan?
thank you @whataboutcollege !!
You wrote this…yesterday
If you do end up chooosing rising as a career…please understand…a nursing degree with passing board grades from ANY nursing program will get you a nursing job. Going to University of Michigan as an out of state student, mat great expense IF you happen to get accepted, is really really not necessary. At all.
I would very strongly suggest that you start to look at direct entry nursing programs at public universities in YOUR state where you would be paying instate costs.
Please also…drop the “dream school” idea. Just do. It’s fine to have a favorite amongst your applications…but a dream school is just not necessary. You need a wide net of colleges where you would be happy to attend and can afford to do so if accepted.
As a HS rising sophomore…you need to concentrate on getting THE best grades you can get. You want to also take the PSAT as a junior…prep for that too.
And start looking at a variety of colleges. Think of what you liked about U Mich, and find other colleges that are similar, and are affordable.
Please…please don’t hedge your bets on a very competitive program at a very competitive college…that might be unaffordable also.
Thank you @thumper1 I haven’t just looked at University of Michigan. And you are right I shouldn’t say “dream school” because i guess it’s not technically that. It’s just a goal of mine to get into that school and it would be a bonus to get a scholarship(s) there to make it more possible. I have been looking into Ohio state and Ucinci as well which are both wonderful schools, have exceptional nursing programs, and more in my financial range. And you are also right in the aspect that’s no matter where I get the degree I will get the job. Thank you so much for your insight @thumper1 !
You are looking at possible schools early…and that’s great. You will certainly find a good place.

The folks there can give you some good ideas, and affordable options.
If you are from Ohio…I would suggest Ohio University as well.
Thank you very much, will do @thumper1
There are so many good options for nursing in state for OH where you could see merit depending on stats. Case, Kent, Capitol, Miami, Xavier, etc… Lots of different options depending on what size you want, location, etc… Lots and lots of options OP!
My D just finished her first year (she is OOS Eng) she received a president award $15k/yr and a grant of around $10k (income is roughly the same). Her boyfriend who is from Tampa also received the president award. There are some out there, and they are trying to give more to OOS students. However, as others have said there are not many of them.
If you are looking in the future, solid stats (perfect is not needed), very good recommendation letters, and essays. REALLY show your interest. Good luck!
The OP asked about full rides or large scholarships. Even with $15,000 in scholarship and $10,000 in grants, that would leave a huge balance as the OOS cost is $62,000 or so. So…that $25,000 in scholarship and grant money would leave a $37,000 balance.
@ericzimm Thank you for letting me know about those!
