OOS Tuition Waiver

Anyone here have any first hand experience with FSU’s OOS tuition waiver? Interested on what the academic requirements are. Our D is a HS Jr with an overall GPA of approximately 3.65 but just took the ACT this past Saturday so don’t kbow yet how she did.

I’ve heard that a 29 or 30 on the ACT gets you the 50% partial OOS waiver and a 31 or higher gets you the full 100% OOS waiver. My D had a 33 on the ACT and got the full waiver. Not sure if or how they include GPA in the calculation…

Thanks, what year is she and how does she like it?

I think 30 is the magic number for the ACT - that’s what my D had and she got the full OOS waiver. Her GPA is 3.9 UW.

My daughter got a 32 and got the full OOS tuition waiver. We are New Englanders, definitely in the minority at FSU, but she has made amazing friends, loves the academics and feels super lucky to have found FSU. She is a freshman.

@Bloke123 - my D will be a freshman this fall. She is very excited to get started! The full OOS waiver makes FSU a much better deal than our state school plus FSU is prettier and had a more homey feel.

@playacar - does your D have any experience with taking a taxi from campus to the Tallahassee airport? We’re thinking ahead to how our D will get back and forth to the airport to come home at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The taxi situation is good. They book online. It’s about $15 each way. Pickup right at dorm and drop off 15 minutes later at small easy to navigate airport. It has worked out fine. Fares are expensive, booking ahead helps but then sometimes she wants to leave sooner but can’t bc already booked. Thanksgiving she left wed am, she swore she was the last student left on campus. There were classes til noon but most were cancelled. She survived. She has flown all airlines that go to tally, each has benefits. No clear winner. Labor Day weekend was hard bc so many kids went home. She came home parents weekend, so much cheaper than us going there, thanksgiving, Christmas and winter break. It adds up but with such a great tuition break, it’s ok The first two months were hard by the end of October she adjusted and now she loves it there

I was just on the phone with admissions and asked and the response was that for full OOS tuition waiver, the student needs 30 ACT or 1960 SAT.

So does everyone that meets the 30 ACT criteria get the full OOS waiver? Or is there a limited #? I just took the redesigned SAT and got a 1320 (ACT equivalent of a 28) and then a 1370 (ACT equivalent of a 29). I will be taking it again to get the equivalent of a 30 in October, but it wouldn’t be until mid-November until I would be able to submit the new score. By this time, any hope of tuition waiver would probably be gone if they’re limited and given out first-come, first-serve.

You’ll want to contact Admissions to get an exact official answer but I believe the waiver is automatic - if you have the correct score you get the waiver. I did see a couple of years ago a student was given a 50% OOS waiver on acceptance but then got the 30 on a subsequent ACT test and was upgraded to the 100% waiver. Wouldn’t hurt to give them a call and ask…

I had heard that the OSS tuition waiver is automatic, but i dont see where the school website commits themselves to any specific awards for specific scores or that the award is automatic. I have a son applying this year who has a 30 on the ACT so i know my fingers are crossed…I hoping but not relying. It is such a generous program that i keep expecting to hear that increased demand has forced them to raise the bar. Honors admittance was automatic for my hs class of 15 daughter, but now it is by application.

Let us know how it goes. Daughter looking to apply with 31 ACT but gpa slightly lower at 3.4.
