What do you think are the minimum stats to secure an OOS tuition waiver at Clemson? ACT/SAT scores/GPA/Ranking/EC/others?

You should get an OOS tuition waiver if you have that SAT score of 1350 or ACT score of 31 and rank in the top 10% of your high school class. Most people that don’t get the OOS waiver usually don’t get it because they don’t meet the top 10% requirement

This ranking thing is so overrated and so inconsistent accross the board for high schools that calculate it.

In our case our son is in the top 25% but his school doesn’t weight. He has taken a lot of honors and AP courses and I’m sure that if they would weight he would be top 10% at least…

I agree lapagan. Hopefully one day Clemson will realize that this strategy is not recruiting as many top students as they would hope. In fact, there are probably schools where the competition is nil and it’s easy to get into the top 10% (I understand because I went to a competitive school and was ranked in the bottom 50% of my school and everybody in the top 10% went to ivies).

But for now, Clemson’s eye is on that US News ranking and a chance to move up in the rankings is to get as many top 10% high school students as possible. While the rankings do a lot of good for Clemson’s prestige and reputation, there are many drawbacks and this is one of them.

We are visiting Clemson on 4/15. I’m planning to stop by admissions and ask about this policy. At least I’ll voice my opinion…

Maybe we should start a petition list…

I can help you by sending a email to admissions haha

I bet the financial aid office already hates me after I sent a few angry emails after getting my financial aid letter May 20th…

Lapagan, I would at least apply and hope for the waiver. My son’s high school does not rank, and he did receive the OOS waiver. I have to check when he received it, as he got a 32 ACT and 1460 SAT in the fall of his senior year. Upon applying, though, he may have had a 31 and 1380. Here’s hoping that by the time your child enters college, Southwest will indeed be flying out of GSP airport and it will be easier to get there.

Pierre, I’ll make sure that I mentioned your name while at the Admissions Office… lol

Montegut, we are from TN. Clemson is about a 3hr drive for us. Not that bad at all…

S is right now sitting on 30 ACT (Jan '10) and 1340/2050 SAT (Mar '10). He is taking the ACT again on 4/10 so we pray that he gets over that hump although he has had a chance to prepare that well because of schools midterms and EC’s… will see, his does much better at the ACT than the SAT. This is just his 3rd time taking it (first time was exactly a year ago).

remember, too, lapagan, Clemson superscores the SAT!!!

not sure on my friend monte’s advice lapagan (sorry T!) May be different if your high school does not rank at all though…

I mean, if you have the extra money and time to apply on the outside chance they change their OOS waiver policy then sure, but otherwise I consider the current policy of using ranking as a criteria to be a huge issue. DSs 34 ACT didn’t mitigate the fact that he was not in top 10%, (need a 4.01 to have top 10% at his school) so he did not get the waiver.

In retrospect, wish we had discussed and confirmed this policy with them before going to the trouble to apply, and before getting excited about their offerings.

He’s over it now but obviously not getting the waiver knocked Clemson out of consideration, esp. considering his stats got him some other really great offers. Bummer because we both considered Clemson as probably the best place for him when looking at their angle within his degree program and a specific, hard-to-find, extracurricular.

by the way, do your high schools have an option of sending the class rank or not? If so, you could just not send your class rank and have Clemson evaluate your GPA. My public high school gave me the option of sending my class rank or not and I chose not to send it to Clemson.

Pierre, that’s a good sugestion although I don’t know if my S school will be willing to do so. I know that there are some students from his HS that are going to Clemson, so admissions would know about it. Maybe a letter from the GC could help too.
