Opinion on Essay Topic

I have a long history of learning to do things myself such as reparing a guitar output jack on my own. Repairing drum kits. and I also work at start up company that is very centered around repairing things yourself. At work I have repaired a multitude of electronics and even restored industrial machinery that would have cost 1000s to have a professional do. So i wanted to focus my essay specifically on doing things myself. My number 1 choice is Vanderbilt so take that into consideration. I am also planning on writing my extracirricular essay on my work at the startup so I would like to not focus on that a ton.

I think you want to use those things as examples of how independent you’ve become-- how you have learned how and when to find information.

Is there something in your background that has pushed you to that independence, or is it simply your nature?

But just as an FYI, it’s “extracurricular.”

Really the thing that pushed me towards those is that I am cheap. I’m not sure how I could weave 3 of them in, any ideas?

Thanks
also sorry for the spelling it

Don’t sweat the spelling-- I just didn’t want it in your actual essay that way.

There are lots of better descriptions than “Cheap”-- though you could go that route and make it kind of humorous. Your topic could be how your love of saving for a rainy day has helped you grow and made you so much more independent.

Yeah I wasn’t planning on putting it in my essay. I was thinking on maybe focusing around how I figured it was already broken so what more harm could I do and figured I could figure it out myself. Also my curiosity just to explore how the things around me worked. Something Ive learned from it is really that if you understand the ins and outs of the things you are working with you can use them much better

Definitely write about this. As the other poster said you could make it funny. Don’t outright say I learned… Tell a story and the reader will know you learned… by reading in between the lines.
