It seems like a lot of people think that taking a required English/Math class the spring semester before you transfer (in our case this semester) and putting it as "IP" on the application is very hindering to your application and can result in rejection. I was wondering what your guys' opinion was on this and if you know anything about it. (I ask because I'm taking the second English composition course right now as I am a potential one-year transfer)

The college confidential community is almost always right when they make a certain claim, but when it comes to the claim this community makes that taking the last required English/math class in the spring is detrimental to one’s transfer chances, this is the exception.

The only UC that I know of that actually cares about taking the last English/Math class in the spring before transfer is UCSB, and even then, it isn’t an automatic rejection if you take those kinds of classes right before trying to transfer. None of the other UCs have gone on record saying that they look down upon applicants who do this. Certain people have done this and have still gotten into the top UCs. The admissions offices of these UCs themselves state that this isn’t a problem.

That’s very reassuring to hear, thanks Cayton! Would you happen to have any opinion on my chances for LA, Berkeley, SD or Davis?

I have a 3.86 currently (from 7 letter grades) as an Anthropology Major, and I’m currently taking the last major pre-req for most of these schools (the last pre-req for LA is not articulated by any schools near me). Personal Statements are pretty good, and ECs are up there as well!

A 3.86? That’s excellent for UCLA because the average admitted GPA for anthro majors was 3.57 last year. You’re in excellent shape and you’ve completed all the pre-reqs for UCLA that you can. I don’t know about the competitiveness of Berkeley’s anthro major applicants, but it’ll probably be a little higher than that of UCLA’s, and I’m 99% certain that a 3.86 GPA is great for Berkeley as well. The average GPA for all people who applied to Berkeley last year was 3.77 and at the very most, I imagine anthropology applicants don’t generally have a GPA much higher than that. You’re good to go, in my opinion.

And if you’re a competitive applicant for Berkeley and UCLA, then you’re a very competitive applicant for San Diego and Davis. Keep up the good work and I know you’ll get in.

I took my second English class the Spring semester before transferring last year and it turned out to not be a problem :). But I remember being worried about it too!
