Opinions on My Schedule. Is it too Much?

I’m planning on taking 19 units this quarter, 17 of which will be math and science, and I’m wondering if anyone here thinks it will be too much.
Currently, I’m slated to take:
BIS 2C
CHE 8B
PHY 7A
MAT 17C
EDU 81 (a 2-unit P/NP class that has an additional 2hrs of volunteer work at a local elementary school)

I’ve gotten excellent grades in my math and science classes so far, and I’ve taken three at once for the past two quarters, but I’m not sure if this is too much or not.
I was considering saving MAT 17C until next quarter, which would in-turn make me wait on BIS 101 until Fall 2012.

Anyhow, if anyone has any input on what I should do, then please tell me. Definitely do so if you’ve had a schedule similar to this. Thank you all ahead of time.

yes, it’s too much. i’m sure others will weigh in, but i’ll keep it simple: this is too much. why set yourself up for failure?

Look at it this way: If you take one fewer class, you’ll have that much more time and energy to devote to really getting the most out of the rest of your classes, and/or get involved in campus activities. The Center for Leadership Learning, for example, has some really interesting activities that are also incredible resume-builders. Then there are events for career or grad school information, IM sports, clubs, professional societies…

The important thing is that any of these other activities can be cut or scaled down as necessary when you’re in a bad spot. Classes aren’t so easy to just push to the back burner when you’re struggling. Burning out at the wrong time can cause a student no end of trouble. On the other hand, taking an extra term or two to graduate is commonplace.

Hm…okay. Thanks for the honest advice. I think I’ll save MAT 17C for next quarter (from the looks of it, there will be better professors anyhow). I was on the fence about the calculus because I took a one year hiatus, of sorts, from it (kind of a long story), so I was worried about tackling that immediately.

Once again, thanks!

Bakemaster provides sound advice.

I agree completely with bakemaster, excellent post. Since you have been getting good grades in your math and science classes so far, why not keep it that way and not take on too much of a burden if you don’t have too? I myself am taking 16 units this winter but only taking two classes for my major, Math 21C (Calc 3) and ECS 30 (C Programming), both of which I know are going to require considerable amounts of time to understand and do well in. We all want to do our best and sometimes that means reducing workloads to balance things out, both mentally and physically.

Good luck this quarter!
