Oppurtunities for Musical Theatre Majors?

I'm interested in going into musical theatre as a career and I intend on that being my major when I get to college. I want to major in either musical theatre or acting. I want to go into theatre management at some point too. I want to know if being a musical theatre or acting major in college will give me the proper education to also work in theatre management. These are the schools that I'm looking at:

NYU Steinhardt BM in Music Theatre

Ball State University BA in Musical Theatre

University of Evansville BFA in Performance

DePaul University BFA in Acting

A BFA in musical theatre prepares you for a performance career, and it focuses more on acting. A BM is pretty similar, except the emphasis is on music. A BA lets you take more courses in different topics. You seem to have varied interests, so I would suggest getting a BA. However, I think if you want to work in theatre management, you should probably get a degree in that, and maybe minor in acting, or singing...if that is possible?

If you are interested in musical theatre, double check your list, as I believe that the last 2 schools listed offer acting but not MT.

ming -- what year are you in HS? It sounds as if you are probably a sophomore or a junior... not a senior?

In terms of training.... in really depends on the intensity of focus you would like to have on your theatre management studies while in undergraduate school. Most conservatory style BFA performance programs will not include many (if any) classes in theatre management. Many will not allow you to double major or sometimes even minor. There are exceptions to this, but you have to research very carefully.

If you want to pursue intense performance training in undergraduate school in the hopes of performing professionally after graduation, but think that somewhere down the line you might like to pursue theatre management as something to fall back on, you do not need to worry as much about whether the undergraduate school will have opportunities for theatre management training. I know people who have made a switch to theatre management after performing professionally for a while. Some have gone back to get a graduate degree, others secured internships and worked their way up.

There are many different paths to a performing career and there are many different paths to a career in theatre management. It is just important to clarify what you are looking for, so you can assess whether a school will give you the kind of education opportunities that you want.

I notice that the four schools you mention above are VERY different in terms of training and focus. What made you decide upon these four schools? Are you still looking at others?

I think more clarity will help you get more specific answers to your initial question.
