Organic Chemistry Lab Online

Hello,

I noted that Berkeley is offering an online lab for chem 3A this summer.

What does everyone think about this online lab as opposed to a regular one in person?

Please reply on behalf on the workload, easiness/difficulty, consumption of time, and if you regretted your decision to take the lab online.

I look forward to hearing back.

Thank you.

suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper easy. Its just Pedersen talking to you (may have to replay a few times if you miss something though). He shows you everything as it is actually done instead of the way he does in normal lecture (on a slide or board). The lectures are split up into videos and range from 10 minutes for very short ones to 40 minutes for longer ones. I’m talking about total time since there are usually 3 vids (I think). You do have to take an easy, 4 question online quiz before going to lab.

By the way, only the lecture is online (and I did not take notes). You still have to go to lab and do the experiments.

Don’t forget that you have to write out the procedure, purpose, physical properties for prelab in addition to the lab reports. It takes a decent amount of time, but you can make it go fast if you’re quick at labs, writing the reports, go to office hours (if you have a good GSI, they’ll tell you everything), have a good partner, etc. I did not regret taking it.

Some people said that pederson is NOT teaching it so it might be harder? But Li was the professor before and now it’s someone that starts with an R. Should I take it instead of in the fall?

I just took Robak in the Spring and she is teaching it in the summer as well. She is super helpful and definitely take advantage of her office hours. She is very kind and very patient. She will take time to explain everything until you get it. I recommend taking her. Her last time teaching 3al is in this summer and then she will be moving on to teach chem 112. Take her class!

Can’t speak to Robak, but bear in mind that if you forget to do a prelab quiz, you will not be allowed to do the lab, and (unless something’s changed) if you miss more than 2 labs for any reason you automatically fail the class.

It might just be that I’m naturally absentminded and forgot this, but it turned out to be a huge issue and took me from an A+ as literally the only person in my section who had any idea what the hell was going on to an A- that narrowly evaded being an F. Just as a heads-up there.

I’m sorry that happened. That’s too bad but at least you ended up with an A- instead of anything lower. You should just like post your syllabus on your wall or something lol

Wouldn’t have helped - the one I missed due to the prelab quiz thing was missed despite my being completely certain I’d done it.

The other one was because I forgot to answer a question on the end. Zero-tolerance policies annoy me a LOT more after that class.
