Organizing Dorm Rooms

We have plenty of lists up on what to bring and some on how to decorate, but have we discussed how to organize things and stick them in the dorm room? What's everyone's plan for reorganizing furniture and making everything fit?

Don’t overpack. One big duffel with bedding/towels. One big suitcase or duffle with clothes.
Two or three big plastic bins for desk supplies and miscellaneous stuff (like batteries, printer cartridges, personal bathroom supplies, first aid kit, scissors–don’t forget scissors, etc.). Don’t forget to pack hangers. Pack your laptop, battery, ipod, chargers, and cords in your backpack.

When you get to the dorm, make sure you know where your bedding stuff is because if you are first to get to the room, you can make up your bed and essentially “claim” the bed that you want.

LOL, i just got through trying to figure it out for myself! I got three of those plastic storage carts ( 1 large and 2 medium) along with 3 totes to go under the bed, I’m going to have a utility stand (that i got from walmart) that my refrigerator with go under, and my microwave on top. I’m planing on getting one of those storage things to go around the toilat (did i spell that right?) to put towels in.

I visited the dorm room (not mine but one very close to it), and took pics and mesured the furnature and stuff…

I’m still trying to figure out where to put my tv…

^If you have a common room in your actual room, putting your TV there is a great way to start an early friendship with your roommates.

I agree that the best thing is not to overpack. The way I did it was by keeping a detailed list of everything I used on an ordinary day. I did this for a week straight, and I didn’t end up bringing very many things that I never used.

My first year and also for this summer:

I fit everything I need for an entire year into three medium rubber maid containers (one with only books, one with office/electronics and one with other crap) and one smaller one and two half the size of the smaller container (bathroom stuff, food, etc). Two medium suitcases, one little suitcase (clothes and shoes) and my backpack (ipod, laptop, etc). The only other things I had floating around was my printer, wii and tv. Oh and I have a laundry basket.

It all fit into my mom’s tiny ass car. With my bike.

My roommate for the summer had like four times as much stuff as I did. Her parents had to take stuff home with them because it wouldn’t fit.

^I’m using the Rubbermaid containers too.

I’ve also found it much easier to keep some stuff in the box it came in for storage purposes. Especially for odd-shaped items, like my coffeemaker. The only thing I didn’t do that for was my fan, which took forever to put together. I am NEVER taking that thing apart.

I have three of the larger Rubbermaid bins. One with kitchen stuff, one with dorm stuff, and one for just kinda miscellaneous stuff. Two of them will fit in my trunk, and the last will fit in my backseat and only take up about half. That leaves half the backseat for the rest of my stuff, and possibly the passenger seat (I may be taking a friend with me to move-in). I’m hoping I’ll be able to fit everything.

Just a question…I’m lofting my bed & so is my roomie. Where should we put our TV in order to see it from up there? Any ideas? Thanks!

flowerxchild, i don’t think you will be able too. :(

Yeah me either. Unless you had a tall dresser, but even that wouldn’t really work. Just watch TV in chairs or something.

Guess I should add in what I’m doing: all my stuff fits into the car easily. I have one shelf with bins (6 containers), some desk organizers, and bins for under a lofted bed. Hadn’t thought about the TV thing, but I don’t think we’re bringing one; neither my roomie nor I watch TV, so we’re just using our laptops for movies. My room is going to be a decent size that I don’t have to do super size control or anything, thankfully.

Will it have high cealings (sp?)? if so, use that space wisely :D
