My son just started at CSULB this fall as a first-time freshman in engineering. When he went to his SOAR appointment during the summer, he signed up for a couple of engineering classes as well as Calculus 1, English 100 and History 101. The idea was that the English course would cover his A1 GE requirement (written communication); Calc would cover B2 (math); and History would cover A3 (critical thinking). The system accepted his classes, and he assumed he was done.

Two or three weeks later he got a phone call from an engineering advisement person, who said he should not take History at that point. Instead, he was told he should take an arts class (C1). So he switched from History to a drama class. He said the issue wasn't with the class being full or cancelled or anything; it had to do with the GE requirements.

I've never understood exactly what the issue was. All I can think is that History would have been a GE Foundation (Golden Four) class, whereas drama is not. Is there a limit to how many GE Foundation classes you can take at one time?

PS Sorry for the typo in the subject line, which it won't let me fix. It should just be "GE Foundation classes."
