Hi everyone, thanks in advance for reading.
I am applying as a finance major and was hoping to be admitted directly into Fisher, instead of the pre-major program. When I was given my Accept/Decline option, my status was “Program: Business”. Assuming this meant that I was admitted directly, I called admissions and was told that I was, indeed, admitted directly to the major program (not pre-major).

However, a few weeks later I questioned why I had not yet received notification from Fisher regarding my direct admission… So I called the Fisher student services line (not admissions) and was told that I was NOT admitted directly to Fisher.

I’ve emailed my regional admissions agent twice now, and have received no response… This decision will most likely decide if I will attend OSU or not.

What I’m asking/hoping for:

Could recent business admits post what it says in their applicant center under “application status”? Especially if you think/know you are admitted directly to Fisher.
Mine says…
“Term: Autumn 2013
Program: Business
Plan: BS in Business Administration”

Thanks so much, I truly appreciate any help!

As a current senior finance major, I hope I can help.

As far as I am aware, only honors students are directly admitted to Fisher, and non-honors students apply at the end of their freshmen year. So long as you meet the GPA requirement, you shouldn’t have an issue getting into your major. You won’t generally be taking anything but pre-reqs and general education classes your freshman year, like bio and psychology, so it isn’t an issue at all that you aren’t in the major.

Maybell - thanks so much for your response, it’s very helpful to have a current student’s help. Although I think the process has somewhat changed… on the website you posted, it states (for future domestic freshman)
“For Autumn 2013, you will be directly admitted to the major program and specialization if you meet the following criteria:
Successfully admitted to:
University Honors OR Business Scholars OR Fisher’s Global Business Learning Community, -OR-
Are direct-admitted via a merit-based review process (see Important Notes below
***To be considered for the merit-based review process:
1. Must apply to the university on or before December 1
2. Must be admitted to Columbus Campus”

So, I’m hoping to be admitted under the merit-review process. Or honors.

However, I have a question for you - were you admitted directly, or did you have to apply once you were already a student at OSU?

Mine also says “Term: Autumn 2013, Program: Business, Plan: BS in Business Administration” as you said and I know I’m directly admitted since I’ve been accepted into honors. Accounting major btw, hope this helps.

f4ngz77, I was in the honors program, and thus was directly admitted into Fisher at the start of my freshman year. I didn’t know the process for being directly admitted had been revised, but it sounds like you may have been directly admitted, since you aren’t listed as being pre-business.

If you have any other questions about Fisher, or the finance program in particular, I would be happy to answer them. I’ve had a really great experience here, and as a senior, can speak to the quality of the classes, the career services, and OSU in general.

Application to the individual specializations are based on the pool of who is applying that year, so you are more or less competing with your peers to get in to a set number of spots. Finance and Accounting are probably the most competitive specializations, but I think having a 3.5 or so is usually sufficient. I actually didn’t have to go through the application process because I was directly admitted as an honors student, but I only knew a few people who weren’t able to get into their first choice major. If you are rejected, I believe you can start taking business classes under a less competitive major, like real estate, and then apply again with a hopefully higher GPA to get into your desired major.

As for how difficult the finance major is, I have found my coursework to be somewhat challenging, but not compared to engineering coursework, for example. I actually don’t spend a lot of time on homework or studying compared to some of my friends in more rigorous majors, perhaps two hours a day on average, and more before exams. It is kind of hard to quantify how difficult something is, I suppose. I do fine, and have been able to maintain a high GPA, but some students struggle more than others. Some of my classes have included some math that took me a class or two to wrap my head around, but nothing too bad. I think compared to other business majors, finance and accounting are the hardest, largely because of the additional math skills required.

I just received a letter from them and they basically said that I was admitted to the pre-major program and after my first year I can apply to the actual major for sophomore year.

That sounds cool. I just transferred to OSU and I found out that Fisher only takes your OSU gpa and not your previous GPA. So the goal is to get good grades this semester and apply to Fisher as a Finance Major. I am pretty good at math so I hope that should not be too much of a struggle.
