Out of curiosity, how much money in outside scholarships have you won?

This does not include school grants or scholarships, but rather, scholarships from third parties.

It seems like everyone is winning tons and tons of money :S

$000,000.00 :)

I've been really fortunate and won 29k from outside scholarships so far. It is really cool. The scholarship that I won for 25k was a scholarship that I never thought I would get. It is so cool! I guess the message is to apply for lots of scholarships and give each one your best shot, even if it seems like a shot in the dark. Good luck to everyone for future scholarships!

i'll post once i hear from most of the others i'm still waiting to hear from :knocks on wood:

I've applied to probably 20-25 so far...and gotten 1 $500 scholarship.

Lots of work, for almost nothing.

It's still too early. I think i'll get a little bit of money, but not a ton.

I think I'll get something like this:
~ almost positive I will get $500 from DaimlerChrysler (mom's employer, only 500 because of no financial need)
~ good chance of some money from Union Plus
~ good chance of money from my dad's national union
~ great chance of money from dad's union local
~ great chances of money from the two Polish Clubs my dad belongs to.

Every little bit helps. Like I said, I do not have any financial need, but I only have enough saved up for about 4 years at a public school. If I get into a private that I want to attend, things will be rough.

how do outside scholarships work with the financial aid package. Do colleges subtract what they offer because of outside scholarships?

HELL no. They would be crazy. The schools don't know what you have won, you just add it to the package.

You generally have to report outside scholarships to the college. Usually they are deducted from self-help first: loans and work study. Money beyond that will reduce your need-based grants. You would have to check with each college to find its exact policy; it does vary.

And dsmo, don't take all the UnionPlus; my son applied for that one, too! I noticed they do give out quite a few scholarships, so here's hoping you and he both win! :)

My sons both won $500 from their dad's local union, too. Older son also won $1000 a year from the national union; younger son didn't win from them last year, but tried again this year.

Full Tuition, $600/year books, $250 stipend/allowance for 4 years.

Air Force ROTC. :)

CalyGirl, congratulations on your scholarship. Can you give us more details?

$0. Though I can't get less than $1, 300 from 2 sources I'm 100% garunteed. I won't/haven't got any fin. aid so it can really only be beneficial in my case. I have about 20 I'll eventually apply to

many schools will subtract. Most checks are payable to the Universities. You can't hide from them !. As susan says, it will first go towards your self help portion, then their grant and then towards your EFC.

Unless you get merit scholarship from the school. In this case outside scholarships may be additive.

$0 so far, but most of the deadlines for the outside scholarships I've applied to have passed just recently, so I won't know about winning any of them until anywhere from April to August (if I am fortunate enough to win some, at least). The ones I'm really hoping I win include a $1500 Robert Byrd scholarship, a local $1000 scholarship from an educational organization, and a $1000 scholarship from a corporation that provides construction material to my high school (one senior wins at each school, so I have a good chance with that one).

UltimateFrisbee, the school most likely WILL know, because the majority of checks are made payable to the college in your name.

MSMDAD,

I won 25k from the AXA Achievement Scholarship - 10k from being the winner from CA and 15k for being one of 10 national finalists. This scholarship is really cool! For all juniors - you should definitely apply next year, although only 52 people are selected in total. It is a lot of money if you do win, though. It also comes with a free laptop and a paid summer internship.

I also am a finalist for the Coca-Cola Scholars, so I'm going to Atlanta next month. All finalists get 4k, and then interview to get 20k in Atlanta.

I feel really lucky for getting this much money, because there are so many talented, amazing people out there. This will definitely help me for college, though, because I have younger siblings that will also need money soon after. It is nice to get these outside scholarships because I can help my parents and family :)

Congratulations CalyGirl!! what part of CA are you from? you can PM me if you don't want other people to know. I hope I see you in Atlanta!
