Out of State Chances?

I'm a white female from a hard public school in New Jersey. My school is well known for being very difficult, and we send many kids to Ives every year.

I have a 3.27 unweighted gpa, I messed up freshman year but I have a great upward trend. My weighted Gpa is about a 4.2, but I'm in advanced classes, not considered honors or AP. i have no idea how they look at an advanced class, as I'm not in the regular or remedial ones.

SAT:
CR 700
M 610
W 680

My extra cirriculars are very good, I have earned many awards in both academics and community service, I'm involved in clubs, and I volunteer at a local hospital.

I want to major in nursing.

It's my number one choice, I applied early action and my nerves are just killing me. Any opinions are appreciated, especially since being from jersey pretty much nobody knows about jmu.

Thanks so much!!!

Im from Jersey too and my school sends a lot of kids down to JMU. Your SAT is AMAZING so don’t worry about that. Your GPA is a little low but my brother got in with a similar GPA and a worse SAT score. You also said you have good EC’s so that is always a plus. I wouldn’t too much your seem to be in a good position.
Only a few more weeks!!! Good Luck

Could you also chance me for JMU?

Thank you so much! I’m just so nervous about getting in since its my top choice. What are your stats to compare, and if you don’t mind me asking, what part of jersey are you from?

haha don’t worry I can definitely understand JMU is in my top 2. And I live in northern NJ, like the morris county area.

GPA:3.6(unweighted)
4.0(weighted)

SAT:1540
CR:520
M:510
W:510

Extracurricular: Boys Tennis Team (4yrs)
President/VP of Heritage Club
Key Club
Interact
S.N.A.P. (special needs athletic program) volunteer
Summer Plus Day Camp volunteer
Summer Plus Day Camp counselor
Rigor: 7-8 Honors classes (one class is called Anatomy and Phys. H but its a college class)
2 AP’s.

I think my essay and recs were good. My brother also goes to school here if that helps at all.

Your honors classes definitely help and your unweighted GPA is better than mine. You probably have a better chance than me because of your course load, and since they have more girls than guys.

I’m from central jersey around middlesex township, and nobody here has heard of jmu so I’m really surprised you send alot of kids there from your area. Hopefully we can both get in, but I think you have a really good shot.

Rupi…I suggest you research the nursing major at JMU. It is very difficult to get in. You take freshman classes towards the nursing major, and apply to the nursing major Sophomore year. The program is small, so there are not that many nursing majors accepted. Maybe about 60? Not sure about that. My son graduated from JMU last year, not a nursing major, but had many friends who did not get in and had to change their major. You can imagine that JMU has about 3500 freshman, and is 60% female, so I would assume there are many pre-nursing students. You would basically need about a 3.8 GPA freshman year, taking the pre-nursing classes. It is possible, certainly, but just know what you are up against, if nursing is an absolute for you. Good luck!

Thanks ddotjon for the heads up. Most of the schools I applied to actually are the exact same way with the way thy deal with their nursing programs. I’m just hoping right now to get into the school now for my shot at the program. How did your son like jmu?

rupi…He really liked it, and so did I as the parent paying for it! He graduated May 2012, had two job offers by July, and started working in August. We are from NY, he liked VA so much, ended up staying, job is near DC. His major was CS. He was also in a learning community freshman year, and if you end up at JMU, you might want to check out the learning communities, was a great experience, and if nothing else, you end up in a good dorm when you are in a learning community!

JMU, in my opinion, just does everything right. From freshman orientation, dining halls, dorms, off campus housing, busing, class registration, billing, graduation, all completely well organized.

This JMU grad is our oldest, so we were new at all this, and he even managed to change his major sophomore year, take a minor, and graduate in 4 years.

My second son decided to go elsewhere, mainly I think because he wanted his own thing, something different from the older brother. Too bad for me cause I would have liked another 4 years at JMU.

Good luck with your applications…and GO DUKES!
