Question about applying to out of state med schools. Particularly university of Washington. I k ow that they pretty much take only kids from Washington state or neighboring states. But if you look at their msar map there are kids in the accepted class from other states like New York for example. Can anyone explain please.
- UWash accepts MSTP students (about 10/year) without any consideration of their home state.
- UWash accepts small number of well qualified OOS applicants who fill an identified demographic need of the program. (e.g. UiM applicants who have a connection to the state/university but aren't state residents)
So if a students applying to traditional md program, not MSTP, and has no connections to the state, are the chances zero then?
According to this very old data …
Why bother to apply? If someone can get in from outside the WWAMl region, those folks probably can get into another top 20 medical school … with better acceptance rate.
Here are UW acceptance stats. It appears that if you are OOR, your chances of gaining an acceptance are not zero, but certainly are quite grim.

And for all you know, that kid whose state of residence is NY lived in WWAMI until he graduated high school and left for college when his parents got a job in NY and moved there.
This is exactly what happened to me (although not with WWAMI and I was MSTP so it was irrelevant anyway)
