Out of state, Out of pocket... How can I pay for this?!?

UCLA is my dream school, and I got accepted as an applicant from Wisconsin.

33 ACT
3.86 UW GPA

My provisional award gave me no financial aid… in fact UCLA has eliminated all grants from non-Californian applicants. How can I muster up 62 grand a year???

The bank of Mom and Dad.
Sorry, but did you not know that UCLA along with the other UC’s do not give FA to out of state students? Did you not run the Net Price calculator?

What do your parents say? You can only take out as a student, $27K/4 years in loans, so the burden is on your Parents. Do you qualify for Pell grant or any other federal grants?

weigh your options. I got into UCLA as well as OOS. And since I am an independent student, they except me to pay around 30,000k.

Sunshine and palm trees are nice but weigh your other fin aid packages with other schools before making decisions.

what career are you going into? How long are you going to be in school for? What’s the job market looking for that chosen career? How much debt do you want following you?

Congrats on your admission.

Most state Us, including UCLA reserve most, if not all FAid and merit awards for instante residents. The residents have paid taxes which subsidize the U. Our kids did NOT apply to any OOS public Us, at least partly for this reason.

You need to get your folks to pay or choose a school you and they CAN afford. In-state public schools are generally MUCH cheaper than OOS Us.

Hopefully you have applied to and been accepted at some Us you and they can afford. If not, time to get moving and apply asap.

My advice is to look elsewhere if your only alternative is to borrow buckets of money. You’ll regret it as the loans will hand around your neck for decades!

Wisconsin has good state choices why bother paying that much more for UC. Weather is much better for sure but that’s some expensive sun bathing!

When you posted a year ago asking where to apply, people asked for your budget for a reason. Since your parents make $150k/year, I don’t know if you’ll qualify for need based aid anywhere. A 33 ACT is really good, though. Did you apply to any schools that offer merit? How much can your parents pay per year without borrowing?
