My name is Kyle and I'm currently a senior at a public school in NY. One of the schools that I'm looking to attend is SDSU, so I have a few questions.

I have noticed that every year it's getting harder and harder to get into SDSU, so I was curious as to what my chances are, especially since I'm an out of state student. I currently have about a 3.6-3.7 unweighted GPA and a weighted GPA of 4.1. However, I do not know if my school's weighting system is the same at SDSU's. I have taken a few honors classes but no AP classes. I have received all A's and B's in my classes, never received a C or worse for my final grade. I don't do any extra-curricular stuff besides working, which I've been doing for 4 years. I have taken both the SAT and ACT only once so far, but plan to take them both again. I received an 1150 on the SAT (math/critical reading) and didn't do good on the ACT and got a 21 (need to work on managing my time better for this!).

So do I have a good shot of getting in, even with the admissions getting tougher?

My next question is about in-state tuition. If I do get into SDSU and decided to live in an apartment instead of a dorm for my first year, would I be able to get in-state tuition? Would you even recommend an out of state student getting an apartment for freshman year?

My last question is about transportation and the area around SDSU. How far is the beach and what would be the easiest way to get there since I won't have a car? Also how far is the campus from downtown SD?

No, you would not be eligible for in-state tuition even if you lived in an apartment. Rules for establishing residency can be found here: SDSU Residency Information

If after age 19, you have the intent of remaining permanently in California, can show evidence that you have been COMPLETELY self-supporting (a job sufficient to cover all of your living and school expenses and no financial help from your parents) and have been living year-round in California (as opposed to returning to your parent's home over the summers) you may apply to be re-classified as a resident.

I left a post on your other thread concerning GPA calculations. Based on your current qualifications SDSU appears to be a match for you. I recommend re-taking the SAT to improve your chances even more. Good luck!

If your GPA is over a 3.0 (which, obviously, it is), CSUs do not take SAT/ACT into account. You should have no trouble getting in to SDSU as long as you have fulfilled the A-G requirements.

I don't know about that HisGraceFillsMe, the average GPA for this last admission that just passed was like 3.6 or something. I also believe that CSU's take your test scores as a huge factor.

tocollege: You have been a big help for me so far, thanks a lot! I don't know if you'll be able to answer this question, but I will ask anyway! I plan on staying in California after I finish school. However, I would really like to dorm instead of get an apartment, especially for my first year or 2. But what if I dorm and then rent an apartment for the Summer and get a CA license and the other requirements. Would I then be eligible to receive the in-state tuition or no since I will be dorming during school?

It looks to me like you will be very competitive, although I have to admit I'm not sure how tough they are on out of state students. In regards to the transportation questions, you pretty much need a car to get around the San Diego area for the most part. SD public transportation is pretty bad, although improving, but you can get to downtown using the trolley that has a station at SDSU. Driving wise it around 10 minutes or so to downtown and 15 to the closer beaches. Getting to the beach you'll need a car but I'm sure it won't be hard for you to get a lift from friends.
