Outdoorsy liberal kid for Ivies/LACs please!

take II... I am a junior, first of all, and am just wondering if the places that I am looking to apply next year (I have already visited a bunch of them) are realistic chances for me.

Schools most likely applying to (in order of interest):
- Dartmouth
- Brown
- Middlebury
- Bowdoin
- Cornell
- Pomona
- Claremont McKenna
- Colby
- Davidson
- Carleton
- Wesleyan (aunt and uncle attended)
- and then some local colleges like UCONN

Sex: male
Location: CT (attend top 500 US high school according to USNWR)
URM: nope
Intended major: humanities-related

UW GPA: 3.7 (got one C+ freshman year and only one B since then)
W GPA: 4.3+
Rank: top 10% of class of 325

SAT: 730 CR, 690 M, 800 W (total 2220)
SAT II: not yet taken
ACT: N/A
AP: Not yet taken (currently enrolled in APUSH and AP Chem - our school only starts offering APs in junior year in only history and science)

Next year courses:
- AP Physics C
- AP European History
- AP Stat (or possibly Calc)
- AP English Lit
- AP Spanish IV

School activites:
- Varisty soccer since grade 9
- Varsity tennis since grade 10
- Interact Club
- Tutor 2 middle schoolers each once a week, 2 hours at a time
- Founder of Outdoors Club that has now over 100 members
- Peer Help Program
- Safe Rides core member (basically gives rides to kids too intoxicated to drive)
- Write for school's literary magazine

Summer programs:
- NYLF (probably just shows I have money to spend)
- Outward Bound wilderness leadership program (went to Oregon for 2 weeks of hiking and kayaking and leadership skill-building)
- Most likely doing something at Brown University this summer
- I travel frequently to other countries... is this good?

Additional comments: I just really hope that my activities show that I have a strong interest in the outdoors/wilderness and that my strengths lie in the humanities (my only non-A grades have been in math and science classes). My GPA leaves a little to be desired, however, but it will go up after this year.

your GPA is a major weak point… a C is hard to get over when it comes to Brown and Dartmouth. Aside from that, you have a GREAT profile. If you keep it up, I’d say youre into at least half of those schools.

Yeah I’m really nervous that the C+ (in Cell Bio) is going to hinder any chances of getting into the Ivies I’m probably going to apply to (with Dartmouth my #1 so far)… but thank you for the input/encouragement anyways. I would be very happy if I got into Middlebury!

I think you are in at every school except for Brown and Dartmouth. Having the average stats of a Dartmouth student isn’t going to necessarily get you in, especially if you’re a white male from an over-represented area like CT. Keep it up and I think you’ll get into Bowdoin or Middlebury, probably the next most competitive on your list. Maybe do ED I Dartmouth for the heck of it and then you can do ED II Middlebury or Bowdoin if that doesn’t work out. They’re both fantastic schools

sherlock has a point with the ED I/ED II thing. If I were you I’d do Darthmouth for ED 1 and Midd for ED 2. anyway, your stats are rather conventional and outdoorsy liberal is the label for most of the kids who’ll be applying to some of the places on your list. you’ll get into some of the LACs on your list but Dart is probably going to be a no. likewise for brown and slightly better chances at Cornell. i guess you’re at the stage whereby it comes down to the strength of your application itself.
