I feel like this is silly to ask, but is it possible to overdo dorm decorating?
I kind of love designing rooms, so the thought of a plain dorm room sparked this insane, unstoppable creative force in me...and I bought everything. Everything. That is not an exaggeration, friends. I even framed a poster of "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" because it complimented my bed spread and I thought it would make my room look classy. Aside from that, I have two unframed movie posters (Harold and Maude [in Italian!] and Pinocchio [That's not the only Disney themed item I bought..]), a dry erase/ marker board, a pretty large corkboard full of pictures that my friends put together for me, two small canvases that go together (I painted them and it's REALLY PRETTY MAN), a mirror for my door, string lights (they're FUZZY fdnjfdska), a freaking digital piano (but that was a necessity), and....I bought a three picture vertical frame and...I framed pretty napkins. They were on sale. They were calling my name.

I'm pretty sure I have enough wall space for all this stuff- at least I have a picture in my head of where everything will go- but is that overdoing it? Do people think you're trying too hard if your dorm is over-decorated? I just wanted a comfortable room that I'll actually want to spend time in.

I doubt people would judge you for it - if you made it work I’d be jealous since I always want to make my dorm look good but can’t figure out how to actually do it. People use their dorms to express themselves, so I don’t think it’s weird at all to try to make yours look good. The only issue I see is possibly with your roommate - do you have enough wall space to do this without encroaching on your his/her space? Is it potentially going to be too overwhelming for them to be comfortable living in the room? I’d recommend talking with him/her about your plans, though I doubt it will be a big deal.

One of my roommates was similar to you (well, there were three of us in the room, but besides that). Her areas of the room were really well-decorated and frankly, it looked pretty cool. It certainly made me and my other roommate’s areas of the room look boring, haha.

Especially because you have separate bedrooms, it shouldn’t be an issue. Have at it!

If you have your own room, I don’t see what the problem is. It’s your space. Do whatever you want with it! As long as you’re not breaking any housing policies, of course.

In my three years of living in the dorms, I always had really really decorated rooms… posters, artwork, interesting postcards and maps hung everywhere, jewelry hanging on a cool display, trinkets etc. My roommates (who I shared a room with, not separate bedrooms) never had an issue with it, they’d just joke that it made their side of the room pale in comparison. If you lay it all out nicely and don’t just stick random things everywhere for the sake of putting them up (which doesn’t like what you’re planning on anyway), then it shouldn’t be a problem at all- people will probably compliment you on your set-up.

Yeah, if you have your own room, do what you want. I’m gonna have my own this year and it’ll be covered in band posters & maybe rainbow christmas lights. Bright blankets. And multiple musical instruments. I can’t stand having plain walls; a room decorated to my tastes is a room that will give me positive energy and comfort.

I think you’re only going to cross into the line of overdecorating if you don’t have enough room in your car to get all of your decorations to your room in the first place. That, or if you don’t have room for something you might want later in the semester.

As long as you’re not invading your roommates space i don’t see the prob. And I’m totally jealous of you. I didn’t really buy anything decorative for my dorm haha. All I have is a lamp from home, small snow globe, 2 VS PINK dogs, and a vase of fake flowers :(

This sounds adorable! I’m on a decorating kick too and it’s my first dorm that will be apartment style, so I’ve been thinking about cute ideas for the kitchen as well as the living room and my bedroom. I hope it turns out great! Good luck!
