Overrated/Underrated

overated: Cal, UCLA, Rice- yeah its too much of a big hype in texas
underrated: UT austin fo sho

Cal ain't overrated

anyway, could someone post a link to the US News college article

haha everyone is hatin on ND. do any of you have any reason behind why you think it is overrated

ND is catholic, this is a protestant nation, go back to ireland catholics

hahaha jk i used to be that

excuse me, how is Cornell overated on US News at a rank of 14, when it is one of the finest schools in the country if not world. I do not care about this ivy leauge nonsence, it has some of the best academics/professors that money can buy.

this thread is pretty rediculous anyways bball, so dont worry about it. people are pretty much talking out of their asses and don't have any facts/experiences to back this up.

true that...highly subjective thread

What are people basing these overrated/underrated choices on?

our perception of the schools...

So basically nothing concrete....

mostly just hating since they prolly can't get into the schools they listed as overrated

bbals: overrrated: WUSTL without a doubt, Emory University, Notre Dame, Wake Forest

underrrated: UMichigan, Cornell, U of Chicago, Cal Berkeley

Since Cornell/Chicago/Berkeley are much more selective than say.. Emory/wake forest. I dont think that theory of yours is very accurate.

Seriously UNDERRATED on CC -- Wash-U, by virtue of it being consistently called OVERRATED and otherwise bashed by people who generally know little about the school itself.

To be blunt, people's problems with an admittedly aggressive marketing program and an idiosyncratic admissions office say nothing about the quality of the education received by those admitted. This has long been an excellent school, something of a hidden gem. Its recent notoriety has brought in gobs of money, better facilities and faculty, and an overall higher caliber of student. The gem is no longer hidden, but many still consider it a gem. A better gauge of underrated vs. overrated comes from talking to alumni and current students. Wash-U alums are almost mooney-like in their positive feelings for their school and back it up with consistently very high alumni donation rates.

This post isn't meant for the skeptics -- let them scoff and continue to use Wash-U as their personal pinatas (where's that tilde when you need one). It's certaintly trendy to bash Wash-U. Instead, this post is meant for anyone currently making their list. Decide on schools based on the academic, educational, and social merits of the school itself, not on often misinformed, or just plain wrong, characterizations. There are plenty of outstanding schools in this country -- depending on what you want in a school, Wash-U is clearly one of them.

P.S. -- I completely agree that Wash-U deserves some lashes for their admissions practices. Prospective students should definitely understand the mined landscape of Wash-U admissions before they venture in. If a student is accepted and matriculates, however, most find it to be a pretty special place.

Seriously, on CC, the most overrated colleges have to be Michigan, Smith and Berkley. Also, although I've seen Notre Dame listed as overrated a ton on this thread, I would have to say that on CC, it is UNDERRATED.

WUSTL is NOT overrated. In fact, it is known as the "hidden gem" school.
My list:

Overrated: Harvard, Cornell (Some people think it is a top 10 school when IMO it is a top 15 one at best), MIT (in terms of academics its awesome, but the social life kind of stinks), Emory

Underrated: Uchicago, WUSTL, CalTech (Goodness this school gets looked over sooo many times. It was once number 1 on usnews too.), Umich, UVA, Rice (so sweet!), NYU (too low on usnews. It has Stern for Pete's sake!), Duke (some people still think it is just a bball school when it is, in fact, a top 5 school)

Just my $0.02

I was saying on US News. I think that Cornell and U of Chicago should be ranked higher than what they are are at.

Duke, a top 5 school, wow, nice joke, ahahahahhaaha, that was a good laugh Devil. Duke, a top 5 school, it's more like a top 15 school.

Underrated: UVA
Overrated: Duke

Duke is the most overrated school on this whole website. Not one person in the academic world regards this school so high. Even its alums are so quick to say yeah, Duke is just as good as x, y, z. When I had my interview, she asked what my top choice was, I said UPenn, she was like that is as good or better than Penn. Whoever says Cornell is overrated is a complete fool. It is one of the most internationally recognized schools (definetely top 10 in that regard) and is one of the best schools for science.

Actually I used this as a guide with some room for opinion
