Anyone going to Owl Days? (Just got an email about it)

yes, just not sure which of the 3 sessions.

For current Rice students familiar with Owl Days: Do we get a choice in the classes that we get to sit in on?

Yes. I believe that they will give you a list of "suggested" classes to sit in on, but you're welcome to sit in on almost in class you want to. You can either tag along with your host to his classes, or he can set you up with some of his friends who have cool classes that overlap with whatever you're interested in.

do they match you to a host? like with possible similar major/hobbies/interests?

They do the best they can based on a short questionnaire, I believe. They ask hosts about extracurriculars, typical Saturday nights, smoking/drinking, how outgoing they consider themselves, etc. When I came to Owl Weekend as a prospie 4 years ago, I was matched up with a host who had the same major I planned to be and played the same instrument I did.

Has everyone gotten this email? I was accepted but never got an Owl Days email...

Owl Days informational page: Rice University Owl Days

"Regular Decision admitted students will receive Owl Days invitations with detailed registration information in their admission packets."

How can they ask about drinking preferences...? Pre-frosh can't legally drink! Unless the survey is not administered by the university...

I don't think they ask the owls whether they drink--they do ask the hosts, though. They ask the owls that ever-so-subtle "on a scale of 1-5, how social are you?" question, to which about 80 percent say 3. They used to ask that question to the hosts, but they would get about 30 percent 5, 45 percent 4, 24 percent 3, and only 1 percent 1 or 2.

They do the best they can to match you with good hosts. It's hard sorting through a pile of hundreds of prospective students and hosts in a matter of days, though.

If you dnn't drink they don't want to put you with people who drink and party (hosts are older). Rice is an open campus, so private parties in rooms are somewhat ignored. At Public parties they are very careful to proof students. They try to match people up and this is one area that is important so you don't get turned off if you eiher do or do not a drink. Remember most students are judging whether or not to accept. If a committed non drinker ended up with a party groups they would mis judge the campus (or the other way), where there are drinkers and non drinkers, but no social pressure to drink if you dn't want to. Also important are sleep schedules and quiet versus outgoing people.

Everyone should go to owl days! I signed up to be a host and I'm really excited about it. I <3 prospies! I'm pretty sad that they've changed it to "owl days" from Owl Weekend, but you can still get a pretty good glimpse of Rice life from a day on campus.

Hosts are repeatedly told not to get their prospies drunk or even offer them alcohol, but some people think it's a "fun" idea to introduce high school students to that area of college... Honestly, the prospie is usually very OK with it. Some even come wanting to experience the college's party atmosphere. My prospies will have fun other ways, thank you. :)

I feel like a lot of prospies lie on their questionaires to make themselves look "cooler" or something... don't do this, you're fine the way you are, and lying will make it hard for them to match you with someone like yourself.

I wish I had time to host students for Owl Days, but it's looking like an impossibility.

I got an e-mail about Owls Days too! I haven't decided which session yet, but I'm excited to visit.

yeah, I probably will have to pawn my prospies off on some friends for a few hours to do homework/tests/studying, but I think it will be worth it... there's always the rest of the week for catching up, maybe.

I know! It seems like it'll be a lot of fun!

I definitely don't have the time, but I'm still hosting on two of the days.

Well, I hosted three students over Vision Weekend. Honestly, though, I'm about to reach a breaking point with my workload. I love hosting prospies, but this time isn't going to work out.

I just registered for Owl Days (April 7-8). I'm so excited. I can't wait to see Rice. Yay!
