I'm coming on the 14th. Is it normally one host to one student or more than one student to each host?

On the volunteer sign-up form, they ask if we want 1,2, or 3 prospies. There usually aren't enough people who sign up to host, so they'll usually add a couple to what you ask for. With this in mind, I only signed up to host 1 at a time... I hope I get two, though, so they'll have company while I'm at lab!

Also, is Tuesday going to be a more informal day because it says departure is at 12 and I have to leave at 11 to make my plane. This shouldn't be a problem right? It doesn't seem like there are structured activities for that day.

I'm really excited for Owl Days!!! Not sure when I'm coming though.

The schedule is really relaxed. Leaving an hour early should be no problem at all, assuming you make sure that it works out with airport transportation.

I'm going on the 7-8.

Rice students: My son attended Visions in Feb. and came home without a 'real feel' for the campus, social life. He has been accepted with an incredible package but is reluctant to attend for fear the social life won't be as desired. Do you think Owl Days would show him a different side of Rice or will it be the same as Visions? We are OOS so I need to know if it would be worth the trip. Thanks!

Well, Owl Days is on a Monday night, so you won't really get a good feel for a typical weekend, but students generally put off work to entertain the Owls during Owl Weekend/Days.

I'm coming on the 7-8th! Can't wait!

As far as difference from Visions, I know that during visions, your son probably met a disproportionally large number of URMs. At Owl Days, the racial mix of kids he meets will be more similar to rice's actual population. I don't know if this will have anything to do with Rice's "social life" but it's definitely a social issue. He'll be able to find any mix of social groups on campus if he looks for them. The obvious groups are the partiers and the schoolworkaholics, but there is a large group of really fun, friendly, creative students who have incredibly diverse interests and ideas of what a "good time" is.

is anyone going 21-22??

i wish i could go on 21th but im an international student and there doesnt seem to be enough time for me to get the visa...they didnt say anything about how internationals can participate in the owl days..gosh wat a pity..really think it's worth going

:D I'll be there on the 21-22~

I'm driving the five kids who got in from my school up on 21-22...should be a fun two days :) We're going then because I know some groups (a cappella?) are only performing that weekend or something

cool, just making sure I wasn't one of the only ones! can't wait!!

I'm still not positive, I really want to go, but its a real hassle. I live in NJ....

Okay so I'm going to the April 7-8 Owl Days and I was wondering what the weather is like in Houston. I live in CT so right now the temperature's about 50 degrees and we're still wearing long-sleeve shirts and pants. Right now is it like summer in Houston? What clothes should I wear/pack? (sorry if this is a stupid question)

nah it's gonna be in the low 80s, so not hot at all. shorts and t-shirts are good. and no, it's not summer...summer is 90s and 100s. it'll be cloudy though.

Weather is unpredictable, so bring long pants and waterproof windbreaker.

Also consider bringing a sweater or something to wear indoors because most buildings are severely over-ACed.
