Owl Weekend

I'll be there with another kid from my school

I am excited, and I too will be flying alone, and I won't know anyone else going either. You and me will have to meet up, mollypockets.

i'm going too. you guys should friend me on facebook. um. but idk how to friend you without revealing my identity, lol.

uhh? idk, well, i'll see you guys on the 15-17th then.

You csn send them a private message on CC, privately revealing your identity just to them. I've make some great friendships that started on CC.

Does anyone know when we find out the identity of our host -- and where we'll be staying?

I don't know if this applies to anyone, but here goes.

My flight back from Houston to home leaves a bit too early for Rice's shuttle. (It takes off at 8:25.) Is anyone else in a similar situation? Maybe we could share taxi fare to Bush International Airport. If so, PM me and we can figure things out from there.

magd--When you sign up for Owl Weekend, they ask you a few questions to best match you with a host. Otherwise, I think it's random.

Incubyte: Yes, I've already completed the Owl "Weekend (?)" questionnaire, so I'm aware of how they try to match students with hosts. My question, though, concerned WHEN Rice lets you know who you're going to be rooming with! Do we get the surprise when we arrive? Or will they let us know sometime soon? I ask only because, if we're told before we leave home, we're more likely to have a better idea of what to bring (which would help "Shina Laris").
Anyhow, I'm psyched for Owl Days!

You'll find out once you get to campus and check in.

everybody ready? I have to get up at FOUR to make my flight tomorrow morning, but I'm really excited!
see you all soon!

Just shipped off DS - now we are really empty-nesters. Have a great time this "weekend", and don't forget to call and check in with the parents. ;)

Same here, anxiousmom! Can't wait to hear from him to see how he's liking it, but I have no doubt he'll love every minute!

I just returned from dropping off my son and weschestermom's son for Owl Weekend. They each received calls from their hosts before we even arrived, so it looks like it's been well planned. It's a picture-perfect Chamber of Commerce kind of day -- sunny, not a cloud in the sky, light breeze, 75 degrees, low humidity. I think there's a picnic planned for dinner tonight.

Here's to a fun "weekend."

Any word on how your kids are enjoying Owl Weekend?

Ds is having a fine time, but when he called his voice sounded all hoarse. Thinks he might be getting sick.

I talked to my son around lunchtime - he was in the bookstore buying the decals and t-shirts, so I guess there's no doubt in his mind! He had attended 2 classes this morning and was planning to go to 2 more in the afternoon. He said they're keeping him very busy :) I think he's making plans to go into Houston tonight with his host but that's still up in the air.

He had been a little concerned that Rice seemed so overwhelmingly science/engineering/math oriented and wondered whether he would feel out of place. He met a few humanities kids today in the classes he attended and felt a lot better about it.

Mine never calls just to chat, so I guess I won't know anything until tomorrow at the airport. He did call yesterday to ask a question but the entire conversation lasted about 20 seconds. I'm sure he's having fun though.

my D likes Rice too.

DS home, and asleep in bed - with a fever and cold, it looks like. He was able to croak out that he wants to go to Rice before he rolled over and went back to sleep. Guess I'll go apply for that housing deposit refund from UT-Austin. :)

Yayy - you have a decision! Sorry to hear about the illness, though... there was some virus going around like that at my son's school a few weeks ago. The doctor called it a "paraflu." I think that means the flu without the attitude!

My son was asleep when I got home ... I'll have to grill him later. It sounds like from earlier reports that he had fun. I understand that he went with a group of students to get Vietnamese food at 1 am last night! (See ... in how many cities can you do that?)

What did everyone else think of Owl Weekend?

My son came home sneezing, too! He had a great time, though. I didn't get to talk to him much - he dropped his stuff home and went out with friends. I'm anxious to hear the whole report.

Gosh, hope he's not going to be sick now
