Just wanted to let people know that the UA Panhellenic website has undergone a huge make-over, and it looks gorgeous! Lots of great information and loads of new pictures. Enjoy!

Just wanted to follow up on Panhellenic Weekend. The weather was gorgeous and the event was very well run. As a matter of fact they were running ahead of schedule. The girls had 9 minutes in each of the 17 houses with 4 minutes in between. D was exhausted by the end of it but loved seeing all the houses.

Having said that D probably won’t be going Greek as a Freshman. For those of you who were there, I was the mom who asked about participating in recruitment week while doing Alabama Action/Outdoor Action & we were told that it would be incredibly difficult and that the girls would need to make a choice. It seemed as it they weren’t really clear on what AA/OA was as they explained to another parent that it was a later, weeklong orientation. I spoke to one of the girls from the sorority with the highest GPA on campus later & she also said it would be incredibly difficult to be evaluated fairly if you weren’t able to attend the daily events because of AA/OA. I know Omama’s D did do both last year, but my D said she didn’t want to start off college so stressed because she was running all day.

Great vibe on campus yesterday even though I couldn’t find coffee!

DD was the only girl to do Alabama Action & Panhell rush last year.

The Greek life department did host a special meet & greet for the girl(s) doing Alabama Action, so last year my D was the only one in attendance to this event. In the past I believe they had more students double.

It is a long day, but for DD she is very happy she pursued both! Loved Alabama Action & loves Greek Life!

If interested if both are possible contact Gentry McCreary Greek Life Director @ Gmccreary@sa.ua.edu/email.

Its all good with just doing Alabama Action…your D is going to make alot of really great people either way! Best of luck!!

Thanks Omama; I was thinking of you and your D quite a bit yesterday while I was processing information. Gentry McCreary was at the panel discussion yesterday and seemed quite nice; he gave me directions to Dreamland afterwards :)

I didn’t realize that your D was the only one to double up last year. Ponder, ponder, ponder…

Was this Panhellenic weekend just for girls, or was it for boys, too? We are having a long weekend because of the school fair yesterday, and a lot of the boys were at Tuscaloosa this weekend checking out the campus. Wonder if they were checking out Greek life?

Montegut: I think there may have been events for Fraternities also because a speaker was running late to our event because he was stuck at a Fraternity event at Ferguson. I did see a number of young men with khaki shorts, button down shirts & name tags similar to my Ds walking across campus.

Great weekend for us, too! Everything was very well organized, everyone was extremely helpful, and DD got a tiny taste of what recruitment will be like. In a word, exhausting!! Still, she met lots of sorority girls and other high school seniors, stayed in the dorm where she’ll be living, and loved every minute. She cannot wait for August! She also met her roommate in person (they’d met on facebook), and the two of them really hit it off. That, alone, was worth the trip!

Hope everyone else enjoyed their visit as much as we did. And kudos to those who organized the many events over the course of the weekend. I was in a sorority many moons ago (albeit at a smaller school), but my experience was nothing like this. If this preview event (and the number of girls involved) was any indication, rush at Alabama is truly the Super Bowl of Sorority recruitment!
