Parents of rising seniors: Let the games begin

Surprising about Stanford diversity. A quick check of the numbers will confirm that students identifying themselves as Black, Asian, and Hispanic significantly exceed those at similar places. I believe the number who call themselves "white" is only about 40%

Judging from a few of the visit reports I've read recently, perhaps summer is not a good time to visit a campus.

And a quick thought for Beacon. I see the sadness starting already in my daughter's very close knit class. But they're also all excited about their prospects. Not all 17-18 year olds are ready for college, though... has he ever mentioned alternatives to college right away? Will he talk about his fears with you? It sounds as if he's feeling the pressure of the college "games" along with the perceived losses of those powerful friendships (which doesn't have to happen, some kids stay in close touch after high school particularly through the internet... and my daughter is still close to her old peer group at home even though she's attended boarding school for four years). Perhaps you can get him to talk before he settles down to the applications... after all they're not due for a few months yet and he certainly doesn't sound like an ED candidate anywhere. Absolutely, this is a stage to respect and not rush through. It sounds like he's a thoughtful kid and a lot's going on for him, as it should be.

i agree with Idler's post about Stanford, above. My son is a senior there this year. We are white and he comes from a middle class suburban public school. His group of friends includes people of every type of ethnic and socioeconomic background. Apparently, your daughter did not get a true picture of the diversity of Stanford during her summer visit.

As a parent of a Stanford student, I too can attest to the ethnic diversity. I also agree that summers are NOT representative of the usual school experience. My daughter is on campus completing research this summer and reports that the campus is very different than during the academic year. The summer high school programs seem to attract more affluent white kids.

D really has no clue which she prefers. Has actually liked all of the schools. I have talked to her about the advantages of applying ED to one of her reach schools, but she really hasn't gotten to the point where she could decide on a top choice yet. She keeps saying she's always going to have doubts (even RD) about the ones she doesn't choose. Agh!
