Haha, geographically this is true but when people say "Asian" they usually mean East Asian (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc)
So ...Indonesians, Malaysians, etc. as well as a % of Thais and Fils aren't "Asian" (not to mention Chinese Hui)?

In the US, "Asian" generally refers to the Koreas, Japan, and China - maybe also Mongolia. "Southeast Asian" refers to countries like India, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Phillipines.

In some other parts of the world, "Asian" refers to countries like India, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Phillipines, while "East Asian" refers to the Koreas, Japan, and China.

It all depends on where you come from.

Your dad shouldn't be running your life. Infact, change room mates. Change your room mate and request a BLACK guy. And make lots of middle eastern and black friends. MAke sure you take lots of pictures nad put htem on face book to show your parents during your winter break of all the great friends you have made.

It's stupid how your father managed to form all these assumptions over four letters.

Or how he figured that because somebody has a different colored organ, that person must be bad.

Nope. In the U.S. "Asian" = anyone who is from any part of Asia including India and Southeast Asia.

The U.S. Census’s definition on Asian is clear.
A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam. It includes "Asian Indian," "Chinese," "Filipino," "Korean," "Japanese," "Vietnamese," and "Other Asian."

There’s no reason why Omar can’t be a Muslim from Malaysia or Indonesia.

However, as this thread shows, not everyone uses this definition. My personal experience supports this, as well.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been asked, “Are you Chinese or Japanese?” It’s as if those are the only two Asian countries they know about. King of the Hill even lampooned this when Kahn was introduced. (Kahn was asked that same question and responded, “We’re Laotian. We’re from Laos.” Dale subsequently asked, “So, are you Chinese or Japanese?”)

It’s a bit of a peeve, but I can accept it because I know that question is a result of ignorance. They just don’t know geography. It’s a major peeve when people who know geography make those types of remarks. Take a look at this op-ed. He basically argues that American whites don’t think that Indians are Asians, therefore they aren’t Asians. Terrible reasoning, but he believed in it firmly enough to write an entire essay.

Hank: (meeting Khan) So are you Chinese or Japanese?
Khan: No, we are Laotian.
Bill: The ocean? What ocean?
Khan: From Laos, stupid! It's a landlocked country in South East Asia between Vietnam and Thailand, population approximately 4.7 million!
Hank: (after a few seconds of silence) So are you Chinese or Japanese?
Kahn: D'oh

LOL

omar is mainly a hispanic name and yeah you have to realize that you're going to go through this when you start college if you don't do something about it now.

Classic! I love that show.

Not really correct.

In the US Asian applies to NE Asians (Koreans, Japanese, etc.), SE Asians (Laotians, Viets, Indonesians, Malays, etc.) and S Asians (Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, etc.).

However, in Britain - Asian applies to South Asians (desis) and Oriental applies to NE and SE Asians.

In Santa Barbara, a person named Omar is far more likely to be Hispanic than of Middle Eastern descent. Just tell your dad that he's actually Mexican-American, even if it isn't true.

It's a shame you had to deal with this, OP.

"In Santa Barbara, a person named Omar is far more likely to be Hispanic than of Middle Eastern descent. "

Same here. My son ( Black ) and all his Mexican friends will be at UC Santa Barbara shortly for soccer camp! Hope dad is okay wiht that!
