The U.S. Censuss definition on Asian is clear.
A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam. It includes "Asian Indian," "Chinese," "Filipino," "Korean," "Japanese," "Vietnamese," and "Other Asian."

Theres no reason why Omar cant be a Muslim from Malaysia or Indonesia.

However, as this thread shows, not everyone uses this definition. My personal experience supports this, as well.

Ever since I was a kid, Ive always been asked, Are you Chinese or Japanese? Its as if those are the only two Asian countries they know about. King of the Hill even lampooned this when Kahn was introduced. (Kahn was asked that same question and responded, Were Laotian. Were from Laos. Dale subsequently asked, So, are you Chinese or Japanese?)

Its a bit of a peeve, but I can accept it because I know that question is a result of ignorance. They just dont know geography. Its a major peeve when people who know geography make those types of remarks. Take a look at this op-ed. He basically argues that American whites dont think that Indians are Asians, therefore they arent Asians. Terrible reasoning, but he believed in it firmly enough to write an entire essay.
