How confident are all of you that your child is in the “right” major? the thing that scares me about SLO (and I understand that it is part of its mission to do it this way) is that my child will be pretty locked into a major at age 18. I wish there was more information on how well this system ends up working for most students (ie, how many end up graduating in the major they started in at SLO, and equally important, how happy are they with it?).

@CDSMOM No news this morning for my daughter on her portal this morning. Still undetermined!

I should also say that Cal Poly SLO is a bit of a reach for my daughter. She has always pulled off As and Bs and has a 3.9 something GPA. However she has always struggled with math and as a result her SAT scores are a bit in the low side. It bums her out that she doesn’t do well on math tests, but I always remind her that those test scores in no way reflect how intelligent she really is. She is a super bright kid and can write an essay like no one’s business. LOL She is an early grad, and while she is still technically in high school and will walk with her class in June, she is taking classes full time at our local community college. Not counting this spring semester she has already completed 12 units of general ed requirements. Her high school has a partnership with the community college called the fast track program. She also has taken quite a few AP and honors courses. Hopefully, what she lacks in test scores is made up with course rigor.

She wants to major in Kinesiology and plans on going on to grad school for physical therapy.

With that said, Cal Poly SLO is her number one choice. She applied as a Kinesiology major which happens to be impacted. Not only that, but they only accepted around 50 students last year. Another reason why we feel it is a bit of a reach for her. But she hasn’t lost hope.

She has applied to and received acceptances from San Diego State, Cal Lutheran, and Cal State San Marcos. She also applied to West Texas A&M and Cal Poly pomona. No word from them yet. She said CPP is her #2.

I just realized that I wrote a small novel. Jeez! Haha

Ha Ha @navy71! I wrote a novel earlier too, so we are on the same page! It helps just to write it all down.

It’s funny because my husband doesn’t understand my stress over the college app process, and I don’t want to stress my daughter out, so having this forum has REALLY saved my sanity! Free therapy. :-)

@goldenwest my D researched and pick her major herself. I think we won’t be sure until they are happily employed! :)

@GOLDENWEST my daughter is pretty confident that she has chosen the right major, but truly, I don’t think that in general a majority of 18 year olds know what they want to do with the rest of their lives. So I can see how some parents (and students) would be nervous about being locked into a major.

From reading these message boards it is apparent to me that Cal Poly attracts and selects a certain “type” of student. Most of these kids are super bright and goal oriented. I can see a majority of these kids knowing for certain that they have selected the right major.

That is a problem with Cal Poly SLO, I think. In engineering there may be a reason to do this, since you have a very well-defined curriculum that you have to follow to graduate in fourth years. However, I don’t see any reason to apply the same philosophy to fields where the course requirements are less stringent. On the other hand, students seem to like Cal Poly.

Have many business acceptances gone out?

From looking at the kids thread, it sounds like SLO is sending out wait listed notices. Oh I am so worried!

Still no determination over here!!

Hi everyone! I am actually a senior in high school, and I have been following both the parents and students thread for some time now. I really appreciate the encouraging words all the parents have to offer. It is super stressful trying to figure out what you want to do for the rest of your life! I am still waiting to hear back from Cal Poly Slo, however with still “no determination” on my portal, it seems hopeless. I really appreciate this thread because it is nice to get away from the crazy gpa’s and act/sat scores posted in the students thread, and read how encouraging parents are. Thanks for starting this thread, and good luck to eveyone (parents and students) figuring out what is right.

Welcome @Hdlabfosbd1! Isn’t this wait crazy? What major did you apply to? Have you heard of any students at your school getting into CPSLO?

@CDSMOM I applied for business major. I have friends who have gotten in, however not with the same major as myself. I go to a challenging highschool, so taking AP classes has always been really hard for me to do. My GPA and ACT scores are basically average, and I applied on a limb. I would love to be accepted into Cal Poly, however if I am not I just want to know so I can continue the college search. It feels like everyone at my school knows where they are going and are already finding roommates! When I haven’t even heard back from all of my schools yet. It’s really getting to me now, and I just want to know the answer either way.

@hdlabfosbd1 hang in there! Soon you’ll know where your going and I’m sure it’ll be a great fit! SLO or even someplace else!

And I applied to most of my schools early, so I have been accepted into Savannah College of Art and Design, TCU, SDSU, NAU, and SFSU. I applied to these schools with an interior design major, and I plan to double major or minor in business. I would major in business at cal poly, and take my interior design classes at Cuesta college. I really feel strongly about getting my business degree, that way I can start my own business, or if I realize interior design is not where I am meant to be I can do something else.

During the campus tour they made it very clear that students have to declare their major so that they could not “backdoor” it into an impacted major - which is pretty close to every major there. Cal Poly is a great school with a great reputation in a great location at a fairly reasonable price (for us OOSers even). So it’s no wonder that there are far more students interested than slots available and there has to be an equitable way to limit the applications. I always figured it is part of life’s lesson if my kid figures out that chosen major isn’t all is cracked up to be and decide what to do about it.
BTW appreciate the redirection on this thread and best wishes to the families still waiting to hear.

My daughter also applied under business with no word yet on acceptance. A few kids at her school have been accepted (different majors). She has been admitted to a few other schools, but also would like to know one way or another from CP.

@Hdlabfosbd1 - Congrats on getting into so many colleges already! I know a LOT of students that did not get into SDSU, so great job! You sound like you have some solid goals, regardless of what school you attend. I agree with @Sudsmom, HANG IN THERE!

Been looking at acceptance thread and now 1st time posting on this website My daughter is waiting to hear for biology. She has a 4.3 GPA but only 26 ACT (she gets test anxiety). Was hoping her GPA would be high enough to get her in but worried now and think she may not get in. What makes this worse is that her brother got into SLO last year for electrical engineering with a 3.8 GPA and 31 ACT (but with 35 on the math section). He is attending SLO and loves it. She worked her butt off to get her GPA and he cruised through high school. She has always felt like everything just comes easy to him. If she doesn’t get in it’s going to be very hard on her. We are still waiting for UCSC, UCSB, and other private schools. My husband and I keep telling her that things happen for a reason and she will get into the school she is meant to go to, but it’s still hard. Just need to vent.

This is all very hard, indeed; it would be harder in your situation @camama2! Good luck and I hope it all works out for your family. We are waiting on the UC’s too, although I am not super optimistic.
