Parking Structure Question

If I wanted to bring my car down for a week and pay to park it in one of the structures each day, how would I go about doing that? Can I pay for more than one day at a time, and is it okay for it to be in there overnight? Also, which structures do the $8/day flat rate (I know lot 11 near Hitch doesn't)... the closer to the dorms the better.

Thank you sooooooo much for your help, and sorry for all the questions!

you have to buy a new permit everyday, and you have to buy it when they open or you'll be ticketed. you can leave it overnight as long as you buy a new permit every morning. you can buy permits in the ackerman turnaround or in lot 4. Day permits work in all of the lots, they'll give you a ticket that will allow you into the gates.

You sure about that? Two years ago I got a ticket for parking in 7 with a 4 permit. This was when you could actually drive into 7 from 4. I didn't even know that I left 4.

Do you happen to know what time the structures open?

Thanks for the replies!

it cost 8 dollars per day for parking??? I mean that sounds like a lot... do students drive to school when they live in the dorms? or do they have to take a train or something to school?

um... we walk.

on-campus housing isn't actually that far from most lecture halls...

oh right, well im prolly going to be a freshman there next year so I don't really have any idea on how this works... so basically there is parking lot for dorms and then we can walk to lecture halls? skate and bike are fine too right?

I'm sorry...I know you honestly didn't know...but this was hilarious! :D

Anyhow, yes, people usually walk to class. There are students who skateboard, bike, or scooter though.

so we can park our cars at dorm parking lots for free or is it 8 dollars a night too?

and for those students who skateboard, bike, or scooter... well it's not for the faint of heart xD
ucla isn't really a bike campus, but as long as you aren't a klutz and your bike has working brakes (or you're highly competent on a skateboard/scooter) then those are much quicker ways to get around. downhill, at least

basically parking is hella expensive for two reasons. one, lack of supply, and two, they're trying to discourage you from thinking you need a car in the first place.

as a freshman, the only reason you might want a car is if you live a couple of hours away and want to go home on weekends. options then include: being a regents scholar or alumni scholar and paying (a ton) for a spot, or, street parking on gayley or other places where there aren't meters and moving your car once a week for street cleaning, while being terrified of using your car to go anywhere and losing your spot, or getting a ticket should your car's battery die of cold nights and disuse and leaving you unable to move it... (roomie's experience, not mine)
if you live in the bay area like i do, or some other far distance, trust me you don't need a car. when i do go home (not terribly often), i fly, and to go anywhere else, there's the bus, amtrak, or friends with cars xD

as a sophomore, if you want a car but still don't get parking, you could WORK for parking if two carless years seem dismal. you could do that as a freshman too... but one year without a car doesn't kill most people ;)

juniors/seniors typically get apartments, and the lucky ones come with parking spots.

but when you're living in the dorms, really, everything at UCLA/westwood for the most part is walking distance. hollywood and santa monica are easily accessible by bus. visiting other colleges to see friends is perfectly feasible by amtrak (and fairly cheap as well: UCLA to CPSLO for only $30).

so i hope that enlightens you a bit about the parking/driving situation here :)

definitely not free. i'm not too sure how much it is (and i'm much to lazy to look it up for you) but, you can apply to get a parking permit which are slightly cheaper than the $8/day rate for the quarter. however, if you don't get a permit you'll have to pay that flat rate...

I f--king hate people who skate. They skate on the road like they are riding motorcycles and they slow down traffic. Some bastard even skate inside PSV (Sunset Village)! If there's accident, we drivers are the first to blame. It's f--king hard to spot someone who skating around the corner inside a parking lots. For real, how to file a complaint???? I dun wanna kill anyone or get into any trouble becuz of these bastards.

free... no, sadly enough no parking is free in the lots. if only lol.

free parking is only to be found on the surface streets... at your own risk

if you're asking these questions to determine whether it's worth it to bring a car here as a freshman, i'd say NO, it isn't... UNLESS you live a couple of hours away and intend to go home at least every other weekend. because from what i've observed, unless you manage to get a parking space and aren't daunted by the extreme cost, it's one hell of a hassle xD

I've a PSV parking permit but I can't find a f--king parking space after 11am.

You can park in lots 4 overnight, but you've to wake up before 6:55 to add more time for your daily permit, or you'll be fined 48 bucks. I smell the taste of urine inside the stairs of the exit...Maybe some homeless people sleep in there too....
I'm a frequent user of lots 4. All-day parking costs 8 bucks. 3.5 hours is 7 bucks. 3 hours is 6 bucks. 2.5 hours is 5 bucks. One buck less for half an hour less. I got ticket just becuz I typed the wrong parking spots number

well I live like an hour or so away from UCLA(rancho cucamonga if anyone know where that is), I do plan on going home from time to time maybe not every weekend but like once or twice a month... is it beneficial to drive or take the train to UCLA(train station nearest to my house is like 20min drive since you can't really take the freeway, all local) because im pretty sure that my parents isn't gonna go to UCLA to pick me up LOL... so there is no parking spots for dorms and if I bring a car it'll have to be on the street? I don't think I need to worry about battery problem since my car is pretty new... and quarterly parking permits have restrictions? also whats a PSV parking?

PSV is the parking structure nearest to covel common. It's a dorm parking lots but commuter parking permit holder can park in there also. There r parking spots for dorm but I remember you've to audit or something like that. Parking on the surface street is pretty scary...

is PSV parking permit easy to get? Im pretty sure I won't use my car a lot just to go home sometime on the weekends so I guess anything works except on the street, I never liked those....

NO dorm parking is easy to get.
i suggest you browse around http://www.transportation.ucla.edu/students/index.htm
for a while, and perhaps many of your questions will be answered.
especially look at the need-based points system, which demonstrates WHY students living in the dorms have basically zero priority in getting spots (excepting regents/alumni scholars).

I have worked for parking for a year now (and as a result, I am sickened by how much I know about it)... so anyway, daily sale permits are definitely not valid in all lots - they are strictly lot specific. You may request a transfer on a daily sale to a different lot, but approval from a parking supervisor is required and you will be denied unless you have some kind of disability that prevents you from being able to walk.

You can buy multiple day permits only on the weekends (i.e. on a Friday, you can purchase a permit for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at most). Also, there are pay-by-space stations in lots 4, 6, and 11. The rate is $2/hour or $8/day, except in lot 6 where it is $3/hour and $9/day. All daily permits (both at the pay stations and the kiosks) expire at 6:59 am the next morning.

Alright...going to sleep now.
