Parking

Can anyone give me any information about undergrad parking. It seems that if you get a parking pass you park and then get on a bus. I've heard it can take about 30 minutes to get to the campus from the lot. Is this true? Is it worth getting a parking decal?

I’m sorry I can’t answer this, but can I just amend a question as well? I’ve heard that parking is bad if you want to actually drive to class, but is it bad if you only want to have the car on campus for the purpose of driving off campus? Like, if I take my car home, will it be impossible to find a space when I return?

parking is miserable.

if you live off campus, yes, driving to the park-n-ride lot will end with a half hour bus ride to the main part of campus. you are likely better off just riding the bus from your apartment. i don’t personally think its worth it, but since the lot is often very populated, other people must.

if you live on campus, you have parking at the hume lot which always has a few spots. in your second or third year, you’ll have access to better parking. if you go to the campus parking website, theres a map. residents can park in red/red 1. red 1 are the better spots that freshman cant park in.

I have a question that is sort of related. So I don’t own a car but I plan on living on-campus. My question is about transportation to classes around campus. Do I need to bring a bike or a scooter? Can I just walk? I haven’t been to UF yet, Orientation is 14/15th of June.

When/where are parking decals available? I already went to preview & either didn’t see them being sold or they weren’t being sold yet. Any idea how I can get one?

Drive to class? forget about it.

Can you just walk to class? absolutely and on colder days IMO walking is much better than riding a bike. you stay warmer and no wind chill.

The Hume student parking is .61 miles from Jennings, right next to Hume, close the Graham, east, springs, a little further to Murphree.

To me having a car is one of personal perference. I am going to be on the sailing team and will have to drive to Lake Wauberg for practice. So I am going to need my car.

Plus on weekends I believe you can park most anywhere? can someone please confirm this for me???

Both of my kids had cars in the parking lot behind Hume their freshman year…my S had a car there last year. He never had a big problem finding a parking space. He took the car out once or twice a week for groceries or such. He did get a parking ticket for “backing” in which he didn’t know wasn’t allowed! Anyway, I don’t think he ever had a problem finding a spot. My daughter had some problems but that was in 2007, and she was always glad she had a car to go to the grocery. She lived on campus sophmore year in Fletcher, and parked in front of her dorm (sophmores on campus get better parking opps). When you live off campus, you are totally out of luck finding a spot to park. So, my D got a $500 scooter and drove to campus every day from her apartment in the Estates. She took the bus when it was super cold (Dec., Jan.) or raining. Otherwise she took the bus.
If you want a parking decal or look at maps of the parking areas around campus: [University of Florida Transportation and Parking Services](http://www.parking.ufl.edu/)

gator4ever: On weekends, you can pretty much park anywhere on campus, orange lot, red, brown, etc. You can park at the ODome lot, etc. Also, after 4:30 pm and all night but before like 6:30 am–during the weekdays, you can park pretty much anywhere on campus (handy for those evening club meetings on campus). That means that you can park most anywhere around campus in the evenings, just get up really early and move your car if you stay the night before professors and others get back to their designated lots in the morning during the weekdays.

Parking between 8 am-430 pm on campus is impossible. The park-n-ride lots are all very far, for the most part, and do require a bus ride to campus. But yes, on weekends and after 4:30, you no longer need a decal for most of the lots (some you do though, and some spots are ALWAYS tow away, no matter what… you have to be careful where you park). If you don’t want to ride the bus, you are better off getting a scooter and riding it to campus.

I have friends that live on campus with cars, and have no issue with parking. My understanding is that since your car stays in one spot most of the time, and really only gets moved when traffic is not at its worst (usually in the evenings or on the weekends to go run errands or do stuff off campus or whatever), there are not many issues. There are some exceptions - like game days, obviously, but for the most part, it’s fine. It’s really just driving to campus during the weekdays that is rough.

how bad is parking if one were to get a scooter? Are there designated scooter/motorcycle spots or would you just park in a regular spot? What would you say the fastest most efficient way of getting to UF is. I live less than 2 miles from UF, and it sounds crazy that it would take 30-40 minutes to get to school. Is walking the best option?

anyone else have any imput?

there is plenty of scooter parking. i’m not sure how the system works, but there is good parking available.

Scooter parking is plentiful on campus. However, because of that, it is gaining in popularity and the parking areas are filling up. Get a scooter decal from the UF Transportation and parking services this summer. Try to access a parking map from their website to see where scooter parking is.

Yes, there is plenty of scooter parking. They have a good amount spread out throughout the campus. I’d say that riding a scooter is a good option if you want to avoid riding the bus, except for when it is raining or really cold outside.

there’s one lot that’s like only two blocks from campus on 2nd avenue that one of my friends parked at. you can pay to park at per semester (i think its $150?) and just walk to your classes from there… he said its a lot closer to your actual classes than the park and ride lots on campus… you don’t have to bus or anything but i don’t think you can buy spaces for august yet
