parking?

Hi, I'm going to be a sophomore at Oberlin this fall. I was curious about parking. Do I really have to park on Union Street/Philips? That's REALLY far... Can I just park in the streets?

Really far from what? Of course you can park on the street, all night long, in fact, as long as you don’t break any town of Oberlin parking regs. But street parking near your residence hall is going to be extremely limited, no matter where you live. And as soon as the snow season kicks in, your car has to be off the street by something like 1 or 2 in the morning. It can’t get much more inconvenient than that. My D will also be a soph, and is looking forward to bringing her car for the first time.

Look at the bright side. We’ve never been to Union Street/Phillips, but it must beat the hell out of where first years had to park their cars. Talk about a long walk. The frosh lot was practically OFF campus. It was the main reason my D didn’t bring her car. She figures the soph parking can’t be that bad. Is she wrong?

From the parking regulations:

From November 1 to April 1—Parking on residential streets is prohibited during the hours of 2 a.m to 6 a.m.
From April 1 to November 1—Vehicles may not be parked on residential streets for more than 48 hours.

^
That is severe, punishing. What’s the reason for it? Do they think the town of Oberlin will be overrun by people from out of town, who drive in, park on the streets and stay forever?

Those parking regs are like something out of the old Soviet Union. I’ve never heard of anything so severe. It’s worse than I thought. Much worse! But the town can’t possibly have the man and woman power to monitor the time and location of every car parked on the streets of Oberlin, so enforcing the 48 hour limit would be extremely difficult. Still, the mentality scares me.

Can you point me to the student parking information on the Oberlin website? I have searched and can’t seem to find it. THANKS.
