Parts of Newhouse LESS competitive?

I am looking into a film program and Syracuse is one of my choices. I know that Newhouse is known to be extremely competitive for journalism, but how about for television-radio-film?

Newhouse admissions doesn’t care what you are going to major in. Although you name a major on the application, you can choose any area you want once you get there. You don’t really have to specify your interest until second semester freshman year.

Yeah, I asked the same question, and the answer is: no, you don’t have a better chance of admission by applying to a different major within Newhouse.

If someone isn’t accepted into Newhouse but they have the stats for the rest of SU would they be offered admission?

Yeah you can, but you need to have indicated it on your application that you’re applying to a 2nd choice school within the uni

in addition to Newhouse which has television-radio-film, Syracuse has a film major in VPA (School of Visual and Performing Arts) So you can put 2 school choices, Newhouse and VPA.

I don’t know the stats needed for the VPA film major as compared to Newhouse tv-radio-film, but it’s worth putting both schools down to increase your chances of getting an acceptance. It’s even possible to put a third choice college if there is something else you would consider majoring in.

Best of luck to you!

What is the difference between the film programs @ VPA and Newhouse?

It seems that VPA is focused more on indie film and film studies and Newhouse is more commericial film and other media. (Although I do personally know someone who went to VPA but is now working professionally in commercial media, so you do not need to be limited by the program you choose.)

From what I hear, they are both excellent programs, and hope you are able to find which one suits you best.

unless something has changed, I think the film major in VPA requires a portfolio review for admissions; check on that before you check it off as an option…

Good point. Here’s some info I saw on the website. (You can also contact the school for more info or if you have questions)

Film applicants: Present a five-minute film. If necessary, it is acceptable to include multiple clips of different projects within this five-minute limit. Include a one-page, typed statement about your creative ideas.

Good idea to apply to both Newhouse and VPA film departments.

(Newhouse does NOT require the film submission, and VPA requires the film submission but maybe has slightly less rigorous academic criteria.)

This way you can show your strengths both academically and artistically to SU, and hopefully get accepted into a Syracuse film program one way or another.

Put your first choice first on the application, but this way it leaves yourself open to which ever program is a better fit for you.
