Party schools that offer an excellent education?

I’ve been to parties at three of the schools profiled by I’m Shmacked as well as a few other schools that have not, and will never make the series, and they are extremely different in terms of intensity. Quite frankly it was a bit unnerving to see just how much the students drank. Even the biggest party at Emory pales in comparison to a typical Friday night at UGA or UCSB.

Of course Emory would never compare to SB or UGa, or ASU or CU. But you have to remember that all these u’s are so much bigger than Emory, so Emory’s would have to be incredibly scaled down. For instance, ASU has nearly 50K undergrads. Add that there are undoubtedly revelers from outside that come to these places to be a part of the action. UCLA’s undie run when it was still going got so big because of outsiders joining in that the administration put an end to it, though there are signs it may come back. There are city college students that share the same turf as SB students, in the slum known as IV. And I’m thinking that the shear amount of guzzling is mainly for show.

If we’re on the subject of shmacked… ;)

[I’m</a> Shmacked The Movie : University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3G1Gd0MSNms)

The shmacked video doesn’t agree with my 2011 experience much though. Walking through Westwood, most nights were quiet filled with students who were probably studying. Since South Campus (i.e. Math/Science) students have midterms every week, the big parties were generally saved for 3-4 day weekends or the beginning/end of the quarter.

Undie run happens every quarter during the Wednesday of finals week. I did it twice in fall 2011 and winter 2012 (being sore and exhausted from running and staying up late, when you still have finals, isn’t the smartest thing, mind you.) I’ll try to do it again this spring if i can get the Thursday off from work.

So they brought it back. Probably smaller edition?

Childish Gambino unveiled the song used in shmacked UCLA at Bruin Bash 2011, apparently. Just youtube search “Childish Gambino, Asian Girls UCLA,” or “you see me.” It’s funny seeing him do the song in Boston, and the whole crowd is yelling, “Asian girls, everywhere. UCLA.”

Here’s a little more tame [Bruin Bash 2012](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube).

And UCLA is undoubtedly more tame wrt the party scene because the biggest revelers do so off campus. There isn’t a self-contained party scene at UCLA because the city is so big, with many who go clubbing on one of the Boulevards of Hollywood.

Size alone doesn’t account for why Emory isn’t a party school. While I’ve never been to Vanderbilt, two friends who’ve visited claim that it’s a much larger party school than Emory, even though it’s roughly the same size, located in a similar area, and is significantly more selective. I don’t know why that’s the case. I’d guess it’s due to the dominance of greek life and presence of DI sports, but size alone doesn’t account for why some schools are much bigger party schools than their academic peers.

You haven’t seen party animals until you’ve been to Caltech.

I can tell you’re highly analytical, so let’s not try to pick this apart so closely. Vandy, as you mentioned, is in league with some raging party u’s. Comparatively speaking it would have to be pretty tame compared to LSU, UGa, Florida, Alabama, maybe South Carolina, and some of the others. That youtube video of a party at Vandy that made its rounds was actually pretty tame. And Div1 sports do, as you stated, have a play in party activity on campus, with a lot of it revolving around a u’s sports teams. I’m sure Vandy students feel they must at least reasonably compete with their fellow SEC u’s to draw athletes to their U. If it were just the top scholastic U in the SEC by itself, it would never be able to compete, and because of its standards has a hard time doing so anyway.

You got that right. ;)

Lol this is somewhat true. My friend invited me to a party her house was hosting at Cal Tech. They built a platform that lit up in concentric circles whenever someone stepped on it, made a five foot tall, completely edible gummy bear, and had an astrophysics grad student DJing. Most memorable party I’ve ever been to.

From what I’ve heard the University of Kansas (KU) is a great party school that offers good education.

Depauw in Indiana, if you’re willing to consider a small LAC that otherwise meets critieria. Nice looking campus, great reviews in ranking magazines/handbooks, moderately-competitive admissions (when compared to schools slightly higher ranked), and tremendous Greek participation. Seems like it can provide a good education, a fun experience, and great financial aid. Must love Greek Life, however, and not be concerned by its rural redneck small town environment.

Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

University of Pennsylvania…ivy league school with HUGE party atmosphere…southern most ivy plus high starting salary

SDSU. & San Bernandino.

“southern most ivy plus high starting salary.”

LOL. Southernmost Ivy? What is that supposed to mean? Balmy winter weather or south charm on the west side of Philadelphia?

A lot of the VA schools (tech and UVa) and if you’re willing to go a little smaller JMU. Most schools have parties though-even ones that people don’t call “party schools”.

UC - Santa Barbara should top the list. USC is up there if you’re into the frat scene. ASU has a fine honors program.

Chico State. #1 party school in the galaxy.

Although it is not very well-known, Berkeley has an oasis for Greek life among major universities on the West Coast.
