Pass/Fail

At my high school, the AP Bio and AP Chemistry classes offer a pass/fail option for semester grades (the grades that go on our transcripts). If one gets a B- or a higher, they can choose the pass option. This is designed mainly for kids who are obsessed with their GPA and are terrified of it going down (especially for AP Chem, it is the hardest class in our school. The tests she give us are harder than the AP test.).

My question is: does anyone else have this at their school? Would you take the pass rather than a B/B- that would screw up your GPA?

How obsessive are you about your GPA? A B/B- won't completely screw up your grade, but some people don't want even that glitch to appear on their GPA, so it really depends on you and how you feel about you GPA

If you're worried about it, take the class pass/fail and if you do well, get a short note from your teacher in your app expressing how well you did.

Colleges highly recommend that you DO NOT take classes pass fail, i'll try to find a source in a second.

ah here we go

"...talked with nearly a dozen college admissions officers in the past two months and they almost unanimously hold the same opinion on this subject. Admission to college is governed by recommendations and test scores, but most importantly by the student's academic record. It was thought by even the most liberal of schools that in order for a pass-fail system to work in a high school, it should be limited to extra courses..."

"never take a course pass/fail. Admissions officers don't know what to make of a "pass" on your transcript. They may count it as a C or even a D in calculating your grade point average. They will certainly decide that you were coasting when you took that course."

Thanks for the replies! I'm not that worried about my GPA. And if I get a 5 on the test, a B in the class shouldn't mean too much, rightttttt?
