pay

I was wondering whether the midshipmen at the USMMA recieve a salary the same as those cadets and midshipmen at the other SAs. Do they recieve a Naval Reserve pay and benefits? Thank you-John

I'm not sure about what sort of benefits we get if any but we don't get paid while at school but we get paid at sea........how much im not exactly sure

why is it that the other academies pay a salary and USMMA doesnt? Did USCGA do the same thing while under DOT?

Cadets make about $770 per month while at sea.

question: why is it that the other academies pay a salary and USMMA doesnt?

answer: because you KP cadets are already overpaid as it is..

Someone explained it to me that the other Academy's studentes are considered on active duty while attending school, so thats why they get paid. Where as were in the reserves so we don't get paid. This could be right, it could be wrong, I'm just passing on what I've been told.

Sea year pay is up to $832/month. And let me tell you from first hand experience, it vanishes into thin air FAST!!

Remember, Cadets and Mids at other Academies have to buy all their uniforms; pay for hair cuts and other stuff that is provided for Mids at KP. So, with what they are paid during sea year, its pretty much a wash or with overtime, KP comes out ahead.

Also, remember:

Naval Academy Ensign starting pay: $2469.30 a month

KP Licensed 3rd mate starting pay: more than that

If you attend one of the other 4 SA's, you are in the military working under the Department of Defense and are paid accordingly. King's Point is under the Dept of Transportation.

Actually, a brand new Ensign makes around $4100 if you include BAH (basic allowance for housing) w/o dependents and BAS (basic allowance for subsistence). A new third mate, on say a Matson CV-2600 containership makes with average OT and vacation pay about $9700 per month. The big difference is the Ensign is guaranteed annual pay whereas the new third mate,
unless he works for a company and not out of the union hall, is not.

CGA is under the Department of Homeland Security

True but the CGA pays its cadets the same as the other academies and they are considered to be in the military just like any other S/A kid.

But all Coast Guard Academy Grads go active duty so maybe that has something to do with it.

Now I also understand that at the other academies a Cadet/Midshipman in ther Junior year will recieve a loan for a car around 30,000. Is the case the same for USMMA. I am not looking for lots of money, but I am interested to understand the differences between USMMA and the other SAs. thanks-John

yeah we get the same loan senior year

WYTL2009-B is exactly correct, we do not receive salaries since we are not considered to be "active duty" where as the other service academies are. if you do army ops then you can receive the same pay as AROTC students. same with airforce i think
