If I want to play in an orchestra or join a studio at peabody but I don't want to music major or minor is that still possible? I know this is different from most schools because Peabody is actually PART of JHU. I'm thinking not in terms of skill level but do I have to major or minor in music to take advantage of peabody?

This discussion thread on the Hopkins Forums should answer your question, as well as provide a ton more information:

Hey Jliu,

I'm a current Hopkins freshman, and I had a similar dilemma to yours. I entered as a double-major for International Studies and Violin Performance (at Peabody), but for myself, it was just too difficult to manage both of those majors (and also, my academic adviser told me that I would probably be graduating in 6 years instead of the normal 4...).

So anyway, I had to discontinue my obligations to the Peabody Symphony, chamber music ensembles, music theory classes, etc. I was a little devastated, but I learned that Hopkins and Peabody had amazing faculty and academic systems that allowed students to freely approach teachers for private lessons or sign up for a ensembles when available.

I was able to continue my violin lessons with my Professor, continue quartet participation, but also join the Hopkins Symphony Orchestra. The HSO is a community orchestra open to all members of the Hopkins community (regardless of age) and is a high caliber orchestra.
Pieces being performed this year are:

Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique
Beethoven Piano Concerto No.4
Rachmaninoff Rhapsidie (based on Paganini Caprices)
Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5
Rimsky-Korsakov Symphony No.2
Brahms Symphony No.4

The HSO is an extremely talented orchestra, and you'd have a lot of fun in it. You will have to audition for a spot in the HSO, but there is also a Chamber Orchestra that is audition free and anyone can join to perform concerts.

Oh, and usually to join a studio, you'll have to play a relatively short audition piece and the demands of the audition vary depending on the teacher.

If you have anymore questions, please feel free to PM me, and I'll try to answer all your questions.

phu08 pretty much covered it, but just to add, it is possible to audition for the Peabody Concert Orchestra even if you are a Homewood student and not a double degree student. There are currently 2 Homewood students on the PCO.

thanks for the help i really hope i get in!!@3333333211111
