Penn Financial Aid - desperately confused!! Please help D:

So I am a Canadian PR, applying to Upenn for aid since they are need blind. I am just very confused about the forms I have to fill out. On the website, it says that I have to fill out "Financial aid for canadian citizens" and submit my parents' tax returns. However, I was wondering if I have to submit collegeboard CSS profile thing? I have looked everywhere, and cannot find a straight answer to this. Also, can I send the financial aid stuff before I submit my application? On the common app itself, it asks if we are going to apply for aid. If I check 'yes', won't the adcom know that I am applying for aid, defeating the whole need-blind thin?

thanks!

The common app asks EVERYONE if there is going to be an app for aid. Schools that are need blind ask too. The reason for this is that those who check yes, are crosschecked for info received for fin aid. A list of all who are applying for aid goes to fin aid who can then get going on making sure all info is received so it’s all systems go when the list of the accepted students is sent to them.

Knowing how UPenn is run, if they say they are need blind for Canadians in terms of admission, then they are. If you have questions, such as whether you need to submit PROFILE or how to fill out "Financial aid for Canadian citizens, you should contact the financial aid office and ask directly.

IF you need / want FA then you gotta check the box. Don’t sweat it–Just do it.

As for the required FA docs, CALL UPENN! I believe penn does not require the CSS. Instead they have thier own FA forms and requirements. You wil need the FAFSA and US tax return. BUT PLEASE double check this infor with UPenn directly.

Here is the link for UPenn financial, aid, for Canadian citizens.

<a href=“Submit My Documents | Penn Student Registration & Financial Services| Penn Srfs”>http://www.sfs.upenn.edu/finaid-checklists/checklists-pro-canadian.htm</a></p>

Canadian citizens do not use the CSS Profile…but U.S. Citizens DO submit the Profile.

woah thank you so much for the info guys!! especially @cptofthehouse‌; i really needed to know that haha… I was so worried because I need aid, but the whole need blind thing… yeah.

i shall call penn for more info! thank you!

Um…need blind thing? Need blind is an admissions term. Need blind schools do NIT consider your ability to pay when they consider your application for admission. But need blind has nothing to do,with financial, aid!

Need aware means it could matter for admission whether you need aid or not. Need blind means it doesn’t matter for admission.

Since the OP is GC holder, he/she maybe subject these requirement? <a href=“Submit My Documents | Penn Student Registration & Financial Services| Penn Srfs”>http://www.sfs.upenn.edu/finaid-checklists/checklists-pro-us.htm</a> Seems like Penn still uses the CSS profile and a suplimental form.

The OP s a green card holder? If that is the case, I would think he would be applying using the same forms as a U.S. Citizen.

He should call Penn and ask.

I thought Canadians could have dual citizenship…keep Canadian and also get U.S.

If OP is a green card holder, then he can apply to all the US colleges as a citizen, fill out FAFSA and be eligible for federal aid like Direct Loans, SEOG, Perkins and work study, even Pell if low income. Also, a number of schools will admit green card holders/citizens on a need blind basis but not internationals. Some merit and fin aid often does not go to internationals.

I took “Canadian PR” to mean a permanent resident of Canada, not a US green card holder. Other posts by the OP indicate that too, but OP, please clarify.

If you have need, it is always best to be upfront. What good is it to be ACCEPTED to a school if you can’t afford to attend? Better to be denied due to need than to have the pain of being accepted and not being able to attend (at least that was my experience).

guys guys I am a Canadian Permanent Resident!!! :stuck_out_tongue: I can’t say what my citizenship is or my friends who go on here will know its me. I have contacted the financial aid office for more info! @KKmama‌ I have been thinking about that a lot and decided to apply aid for more schools… it would suck if I get accepted to say, NYU, but cant pay 60k a year /:

Ha! Lots of students get accepted to NYU with need, having applied for fin aid and still end up with a $60k charge. NYU does not meet full need for most of their students…

@cptofthehouse‌ 60k for the remaining 3 years in total, or 60k EACH year for the remaining 3 years? D:

Each year…

OP, I urge you to run some NPCs and get some idea what your family and you are going to be asked to contribute. Run them for Penn, NYU and some other schools that interest you. They are not anywhere as accurate for international students, but unless your family has some unusual situations financially, they would likely be close. If you come up with larger amounts than your family can possibly pay, you can pretty much be certain that the likelihood of a school being affordable through financial aid is just about zilch. If you want to still apply to some “dream schools” as lottery tickets, just in case, go on ahead. But start looking for schools that might have some merit money for you. Like Drexel or Temple in Philly instead of Penn–both have merit awards. If you are a good candidate for Penn, you are likely to get a full tuition award at Temple. You do have to make sure that international students are eligible for the awards. But you have to go where you can afford the tab.

What can you and your parents afford and are willing to pay for each year of college? That and what the school might contribute to you as seen by NPCs and possible merit awards are what will show you what your best possibilities are.

oh wow 60k per year??? i have 3 other siblings after me… this is going to be fun…

@cptofthehouse‌ thank you so much for the info! I am assuming that I should use the NPCs from each school? Or is there just a general one I can use? If the US unis end up costing too much I still have canadian backups that are just as good. I mean, like I said, I want to aim high, but if money is going to be an issue… I don’t want to go in debt :O

Ok…then if the OP is a Canadian citizen, the link I provided upstream gives what he needs to do to apply for aid at U Penn…and the deadlines for doing so.

@thumper1‌ yep I already printed out the necessary forms. thanks!
