Penn= preppy?

I’ve been reading a lot about penn lately, and one thing that I’ve definitely noticed was the way penn students are always labeled as “preppy” or “jocky.”
Obviously these are generalizations, there will always be a million type of kids at a school upenn’s size… but still do you guys think it is pretty true?

Also, I go to a private school, so I’ve been around preppiness my whole life, many of my best friends rock the popped collar. its not my style, but I don’t really have anything against it. The thing is, I do dislike the way a lot of preppy people seem to have this arrogant as hell, obnoxiously rich attitude, and I’m sort of worried about that kind of thing being wide-spread at penn…

thoughts/opinions?

i read an article about income disparaties in america....one of the facts that was used was this: the parents of a harvard student make an AVERAGE of 150,000....that is an insane amount of money in relation to the national average.....my point: most "good" schools will have rather rich people....and if you are willing to generalize about how rich people act (popped culture and such), then this would apply to most "good" schools you will be looking into....

myself, i pop my collar....BUT im not rich and i dont pretend i am....i just think it looks nice lol.....i may be arrogant, but thats in terms of intelligence and such (not money).....so even though i recognize you are making generalizations, i will recommend that you dont count too much on them

well being at penn there is definitely a general preppy vibe around campus. You'll walk around and practically every girl has a ****ing burberry scarf and some designer purse. There are a lot of popped collars and such but there are so many people on campus that you dont have to associate yourself with these kinds of people if you dont want to - you'll definitely find your own crowd. Like most of the people like this are people in Owls, Theos, Tabard, St. A's, Zetes, Castle, etc. I personally hang out with most of these people and although they can be pretty arrogant I still enjoy chillin with them...everyone generally is pretty nice at penn. I do recommend, however, that you go to some of these "elitist" groups' parties. They are kick ass.

I'm not the preppy type, I'm very....ahhh..How do I put it? Natural? lol

I hate to get off topic, but how is the diversity at PENN? I once read a comment on how some of the students "self-segregate" themselves.

35% Jew, 25% Asian, 7% Black, 7% Hispanic.

35% Jew is this for real. I'm not saying I don't like Jewish people but how do they know this?

It's from Hillel, a jewish org. Penn has more jews than any other Ivy school.

25% Asian? really? b/c that would be great. i love jewish people! my friends are all jewish... but then again, so is most of my school and they're probably the only people i come in contact with besides like 3 other asians... but anyways, that's not the point.

being preppy means nothing. some people just like the looks of it (come on, the polos, the sweaters, and the nice shirts) like i do. i've got no money comparing to the rest of the population at my school!

I come from a very small non-diverse town, so I don't know any Jewish people, I've only met like one Jewish girl. I have nothing against Jewish people though, I just like the thought of going somewhere with diversity.

Penn is NOT preppy at all. Princeton is preppy. Sperry topsiders, Lilly Pulitzer, Nantucket, and boarding school is preppy. Having four names is preppy.

Burberry, on the other hand, is NOT preppy. Neither is Juicy Couture, Solow, gelled hair, Abercrombie and Fitch, American Eagle, or Prada. This is a New-York spinoff, nouveau-rich suburban Tri-State area look. The students are affluent, mostly athletic, and generally smart, sure, but not preppy.

Will you find real preppy people at Penn? Sure. But a school with 35% Jewish people (no offense intended) is by nature, not preppy.

I can understand you saying Burberry is not preppy, but American Eagle and Abercrombie and Fitch aren't preppy? Please...

Are you kidding? American Eagle and Abercrombie are so un-preppy, it's ridiculous. You have to make the distinction between trendy, jocky, JAPPY clothes and PREPPY. Just because both signify affluence and exclusivity doesn't mean they're the same.

Trust me, I go to boarding school.

American Eagle and Aeropostale are copies of Abercrombie and Fitch. Burberry can go both ways... preppy or ghetto bling (can't believe i just said 'ghetto bling').

At my school:
Prada, stuck up.
Juicy, yes.
So Low, yes.
Ugg, yes.
Kate Spade, yes.
Herve Chapalier and Longchamp totes, yes

Because where I live: money = preppiness

Actually, let me make a change.

So Low, slutty, not preppy.

Canadia, are you from either the Tri-State area or LA? That stuff is trendy; it's not preppy.

tri-state. i go to a public preppy public school and the private schools here are even preppier. one of the dudes in private school just had his mtv "my sweet sixteen" aired.

but i would like to say that at my school, those so low pants, as low as they already are, girl still row them down. ::sigh::

but yea, i do agree that the stuff is trendy but i don't see a reason for girls to expose themselves in that way just for the sake of attracting attention. i've got hardtail pants, but i wear them for gym and lounging b/c they're flexible.

i'm not here to bash this stuff... i like half it myself.

this doesn't really answer any questions about the preppyness level at penn, bu its funny http://www.georgetownheckler.com/collar.html

SO LET me get this straight is being preppy dressing like that one Prince William of England. If so I don't mind because I like a clean cut guy. Or is being preppy being snobbish. If so and if Penn is full of "preppy" kids then I don't want to go there.

ke (yes, the asian laugh).

it can be both really. sometimes, people have the preppy look and aren't snobbish because they just like the look while others are downright snobby and rich.

Weeeell that's the other thing. So far we've mostly been talking about clothing/lifestyle. Attitude is totally different. My impression of Penn when I visited (and from the thirty-some odd people I know there) is that the students are generally pretty smart and friendly, but it's more like high school than the other Ivies- more cliques. Also, most of the students are pretty sheltered, rich, and used to being the all-around American Dream at their old schools. Not everyone, of course, but that's what I garnered.
