On another thread, there were a lot of posts claiming that UPenn is a really preppy school where the majority of students wear really expensive clothes and spend ridiculous amounts of cash. Is this true? Also, are the students in Wharton cut-throat competitive?

I can tell you from living around Philly and being on campus nonstop from having a dad who works there that it is quite true what you hear about the abundant preppiness at PENN. However, for as many people there who dress in all the latest designer goods there are many kids who don't fit that stereotype at all and I doubt they are ostricized for it one bit. But yeah, walking on Locust walk you can get that vibe that some of these people have a lot more money than me, but I wouldn't let that hinder anyone from considering going there.

About preppiness: In a school of 10k undergrads i promise you that you will find people to hang out with.

I hope y'all don't wear Prada, Coach, Versace, etc.

Good 'ol Columbia/Polo/regular button down +Jeans/slacks right, guys?

The popped collar is always a nice touch

youre going to find people who wear prada, ysl, etc.
however, it is college and not everyone is going to be in the latest designer duds...including many who can afford it. there is going to be a mix so don't let it worry your litlte head :)

if you define preppy by the uggs, polos, juicy, expensive school bags, etc, i think what you are seeing are the main line people from the philly suburbs. because i live here, i can say that where i live is probably the preppiest within a 100 mile radius. there is a good few (well, a lot relative to the population of the school) who get into penn each year... but that's just a few and i'm sure you'll be able to tolerate that small percentage since i have lived and gone to school with a large percent...

canadia what school u go to?

it could possibility be in the vicinity of lower merion township... maybe... i don't want to be a target... but actually i don't go to lm, i go to the other high school that no one really knows about unless you're nearby.

sounds like harriton to me. ;)

I'm from the mainline as well and know exactly what you're talking about with the bling bling.

haha... where are you from mrhappyface?

definately a lot of rich kids with their $$$ lifestyles over at LM

pop yo collah
holla for a dollah
word....

Yeah...

LM definitely, but I think it's more heavily concentrated at Harriton... although it may just be the population difference and the fact that some areas are forced to go here.

the preppiness is exactly one of the reasons i feel i would enjoy penn

well i'm used to it. through the thick layer of preppiness, there are pretty decent people here.

of course:)
yea, i'm pretty sure harriton is more preppy, like you said i think the student body is wealthier in the area that harriton serves.

Thanks for all of the replies. I asked the question because I'm deciding whether I should even bother sending in a transfer application to UPenn. I doubt I'd even get in due to my relatively low test scores and lack of distinguishable EC's, but I also figured that it'd be pointless to apply if the general student body is as preppy as it's characterised to be because I definitely wouldn't fit into an atmosphere of preppiness and "collar-popping."

yeah, i hope i can find some kids like me at penn when i attend this fall.

if not, ill hang out with current friends of mine at other unis.

what kind of people are like you choco?
